(CNN Fri. 12/1/23) Many colleges and universities have struggled in recent weeks to balance free speech on the Israel-Hamas war while maintaining a healthy atmosphere. Harvard was recently added to the list of schools facing a federal probe over allegations of antisemitism and Islamophobia. And in California, over 150 professors are pushing back on guidance to hold neutral viewpoints on the Middle East, saying it violates their academic freedom.

Israeli military confirmed new airstrikes claiming Hamas “violated the operational pause” by firing a rocket toward Israel (toward!). Qatar and Egypt tried to extend another two days but no. Israel gave up 240 Palestinian prisoners for Hamas's release of 110 hostages and allowed much-needed aid to Gaza. Netanyahu had repeatedly vowed to “crush” Hamas once the truce expired.
Joke of a Secretary of State Antony Blinken (WHERE’S HENRY KISSINGER WHEN YOU NEED HIM? RIP, 100, not bad…) — Blinken urged Israel to protect civilians in Gaza (thought that was Hamas’s job). Evil UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed his deep regret about airstrikes resuming, calling it a “war on children.” (No, that’s called abortion, or “Women’s Rights.”)

(theSkimm Fri. 12/1/23) DeSantis vs. Newsom. Yesterday, in a face-off no one asked for, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) debated Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) in Georgia on immigration, gun control, abortion, and more. DeSantis is running for president. Newsom is not. Or at least…not yet. Still, the debate went ahead with Fox’s Sean Hannity as the moderator. Newsom pitched himself as the Biden administration’s No. 1 cheerleader. He also took a jab at DeSantis’s trailing polling numbers, saying “neither of us will be the nominee for our party in 2024.” For his part, DeSantis called Newsom a “liberal bully” and accused him of running a “shadow campaign” for president. There are more debates where that came from. The next prime-time showdown is next week with GOP presidential candidates taking the stage.

(theSkimm Fri. 12/1/23) Based lying fat effeminate RINO Rep. George Santos's (R-NY). Today, the House is expected to vote (for the third time) on whether or not to expel the freshman lawmaker. Santos's troubles began shortly after he won his seat, 2022 midterms. Allegations he lied about holding a job at Goldman Sachs, graduating college, his grandparents fleeing the Holocaust(!), and more. Last month, the “House Ethics Committee” (WHAT A JOKE) released a report of "substantial evidence" Santos violated federal law via campaign fraud. GIMME A BREAK.
Now, Santos says he expects the vote to succeed but refuses to resign (BASED). He says his expulsion would “haunt” lawmakers in the future by the precedent it sets. If Santos is expelled from Congress today, he would be the sixth person in history to get the congressional boot — first in over 20 years.

(CNN Fri. 12/1/23) QUOTE: “Flu season is just beginning across most of the country, though accelerating fast.” — CDC Director Dr. Mandy Cohen, advising that the threat of respiratory illnesses is underway in the US. An uptick in flu cases is expected throughout December and January, Mandy Cohen said, alongside rising levels of Covid-19 and respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV. More than a third of adults and children have gotten their flu shot this year, according to the latest data from the CDC.

Mama EPA vs Lead Pipes
(theSkimm Fri. 12/1/23) Govt focusing on Lead. Yesterday, the Environmental Protection Agency proposed a rule that would remove all lead water pipes within 10 years, potentially costing utility companies and taxpayers at least $30 billion. There are still about 9 million lead pipes in the US, with many located in Illinois and Rhode Island. One group found in 2021 that more than half of the US population drank water from pipes carrying elevated levels of lead. That threatens to put them at higher risk for cancer, stroke, and kidney disease, and creates growth and developmental issues in children. The EPA's expected to roll out a final rule in the fall.

Yesterday, a report found that Gen Z and millennial women are facing greater risks to their well-being and safety compared to their moms or grandmothers. Researchers found that harmful social media content, lingering impacts of covid, political divides, and rising inflation are putting women in their 20s and 30s at an increased risk of suicide, maternal mortality, and murder. On a brighter note, Gen Z and millennial women are more likely to get a degree and are seeing lower incarceration rates.
Radical homosexuals vs Russia

The move comes as Russia has been increasing restrictions on “non-traditional” sexual orientations and gender identities.

(CNN Fri. 12/1/23) Global delegates at the COP28 climate summit in Dubai formally adopted a damage fund for countries to help nations hit hardest by the climate crisis. Several countries pledged millions of dollars to the fund, but the US is receiving criticism for contributing an “embarrassing” amount of money — less than a fifth of the United Arab Emirates’ contribution. The UAE pledged $100 million, as did Germany. The UK announced £60 million, while the US committed $17.5 million and Japan contributed $10 million. Climate experts and advocacy groups largely praised the rich nations for their contributions, but they also said it was just a first step on a long road to ensuring the countries hit hardest by the climate crisis are fully supported.

(CNN Fri. 12/1/23) Former President Donald Trump’s attorneys in the Georgia election subversion case will appear in a Fulton County courtroom for the first time today to defend their client, though Trump won’t be with them. The historic indictment of Trump and 18 co-defendants in August, which includes felony racketeering charges, is one of several legal cases facing the former president. In Georgia, Trump and his alleged co-conspirators face a combined 41 state charges of trying to overturn legitimate election results in the 2020 presidential election. Fulton County prosecutors want Trump’s trial to begin in August 2024, which would be in the middle of his presidential election campaign if he wins the Republican nomination. However, it remains up to the judge overseeing the case to set a trial date.
