House passes short-term spy powers extension in late-night vote after deal falls apart
The House approved a short-term renewal of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act until April 30 early Friday, after a GOP revolt blocked a longer five-year extension proposed by leadership.
President Donald Trump had demanded a clean 18-month reauthorization all week, but House Republican rebels blocked a last-minute five-year deal unveiled late Thursday intended to appease holdouts.
In a 200-220 vote at about 1:15 a.m. Friday, 12 Republicans joined almost all Democrats to defeat the proposal, with lawmakers citing concerns about protecting Americans' privacy and the rushed legislative process.
(Oh so it was gonna expire Apr 20, but they extended it to Apr 30, woah. Instead of a year and a half like Trump wanted, or FIVE years like some “leadership” wanted!)
Google AI: (The FBI has used Section 702 databases to run hundreds of thousands of warrantless searches on Americans, including 19,000 donors to a political campaign, January 6 protesters, and even members of Congress. The secret FISA Court has repeatedly slammed the FBI for "persistent and widespread" violations of the rules meant to protect Americans' privacy.)
Google AI: (Hake: FISA shenanigans is how the Obama admin spied on the Trump campaign, right? DIFFERENT part of the law, though, per Google AI) — Title I of FISA, not Section 702. In 2019, a Justice Department Inspector General report found "serious performance failures" by the FBI when they applied for warrants to surveil Trump campaign aide Carter Page… former FBI lawyer pleading guilty to falsifying a document to make Page look more suspicious… DOJ later admitted it lacked probable cause for at least two of the four warrants issued against Page.
Ground News: Lawmakers face a familiar tension as they weigh national security risks against constitutional concerns; FISA permits intelligence agencies to collect foreign communications that incidentally include Americans without a warrant.
Former Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax kills his wife and then himself, police say
Justin Fairfax - Wikipedia – Cerina Fairfax (Wikipedia article up for deletion)
Wikipedia: The two were “separated” but living together at the time — and in the process of divorcing (Cerina Fairfax had filed for divorce last year).[97] He allegedly shot his wife multiple times before shooting and killing himself. The pair's (teenage) children were home at the time, and their (teenage HS basketball player) son (Cameron) called 911 following the shooting.[96][97] (Their teen Lacrosse-playing daughter is Carys [typically pronounced CARE-iss]. - Google AI)
On Thursday, April 16, 2026, former Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax fatally shot his (nearly two-years-older) wife (of 19 years’ marriage), [dentist] Cerina Fairfax, in their Annandale home before killing himself. Police discovered both bodies shortly after midnight following a 911 call.
Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis stated the tragedy stemmed from a domestic dispute tied to the couple's "complicated or messy divorce." Justin had recently been served court paperwork for an upcoming proceeding.
Cameron and Carys, the couple's teenage children, were present but unharmed, with Cameron placing the 911 call. Chief Davis noted that home camera footage proved Justin's January allegation that Cerina assaulted him was untrue [according to the chief].
Victim services staff are providing urgent care and support to the children, whose well-being remains a primary concern. The Fairfax County Police Department continues an active criminal investigation into the incident.
Despite serving as lieutenant governor from 2018 to 2022, Justin's career was marked by denied 2019 sexual assault allegations. Observers noted irony in his past advocacy for "red flag" gun laws following the murder-suicide.

RFK Jr. defends proposed 12% health budget cut, measles response in House testimony
On Thursday, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. testified before the House Ways and Means Committee, defending a proposed 12.5% budget cut to his department while facing sharp criticism from lawmakers over vaccine policies and agency overhauls.
Kennedy argued the department must "tighten our belt" because of the nation's $39 trillion federal deficit, defending the 12.5% funding reduction despite bipartisan concerns about impacts on medical research and public health initiatives.
Democratic Rep. Linda Sanchez challenged Kennedy over the recent measles surge, asking if vaccination could have saved a child who died in Texas last year; Kennedy replied, "It's possible, certainly."
Addressing accusations about his agency's direction, Kennedy claimed fraud accounts for "about $100 billion a year" in entitlement programs, arguing this mismanagement necessitated his aggressive budget and policy changes despite fierce Democratic pushback.
Seven congressional hearings are scheduled for Kennedy over the coming week, including testimony before the Senate Health Committee next Wednesday, where lawmakers will further scrutinize his department's budget and controversial leadership decisions.
