Tracking data suggests up to 25,000 fraudulent calls were made to residents across the Granite State as investigators quickly try to find the identity of the caller behind the scheme.
Hamas’s Hostages (Israel-Palestine war drama)
(CNN or theSkimm Tue 1-23-24) Israel has offered Hamas a two-month ceasefire as part of a prospective deal that would free more than 100 hostages being held in Gaza, according to Axios. The broader agreement would allow the safe passage out of Gaza for top Hamas leaders who orchestrated the October 7 attacks. Analysts say that draining Gaza of its leaders could weaken Hamas’ grip on the war-torn strip while also allowing Israel to continue tracking down high-value targets abroad. On the ground, 21 Israeli soldiers were killed in combat in Gaza on Monday in the biggest single loss of life for Israeli troops since the start of the war.
Fed-facilitated Invasion
(CNN or theSkimm Tue 1-23-24) The Supreme Court will allow US Border Patrol agents to remove razor wire deployed by Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott’s security initiative at the US-Mexico border. The vote on Monday was 5-4. While the justices’ order will now face legal challenges from the state, it is nonetheless a major victory for President Biden in his ongoing dispute with Abbott over his border policy. The crisis in the region has been particularly fraught in recent days after three migrants drowned in a section of the Rio Grande. Federal officials said they were unable to assist in the emergency rescue because Texas state officials had blocked agents’ access to crossing areas.
What can be removed for now: Razor wire. Yesterday, the Supreme Court allowed Border Patrol agents to remove barbed wire along parts of the US-Mexico border. The 5-4 ruling sided with the Biden administration, which has been disputing Texas’ border policy in the courts. Texas officials put up the razor wire as a way to keep migrants from illegally crossing the border. But the Biden admin argued the wire has made it more difficult for federal agents to do their job, including apprehending migrants and responding to emergency situations like drownings. Now, Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) is vowing to “defend Texas' constitutional authority to secure the border” after the high court’s ruling.

The quake struck shortly after 2 a.m. local time, collapsing structures and downing power lines. The epicenter is a remote, mountainous and sparsely populated area near China’s border with Kyrgyzstan. Heavy tremors were also felt in cities hundreds of miles away, including the Silk Road oasis of Kashgar and Hotan in southern Xinjiang. Nearly 200 rescue workers have been dispatched to the quake zone, and hundreds more are being assembled, authorities say.
MLK’s youngest boy died

He was 62. Dexter worked as chairman of The King Center for Nonviolent Social Change, a non-profit started by Coretta Scott King, and president of the King Estate.

Plane body parts popping off

The Max 9 aircraft were pulled out of service more than two weeks ago following the failure of a door plug that detached during an Alaska Airlines flight. This week, the FAA recommended additional inspections of an earlier generation of the 737 — the Boeing 737-900ER — over similar concerns with bolts that secure the door to the airframe.

Adoptive mother abusing “maternity leave,” not even a real mother!
(CNN or theSkimm Tue 1-23-24) Spoiled woman vs Kyte Baby. Over the weekend, the CEO of the baby clothing company apologized for denying an adoptive mother’s request to work remotely while her baby was in the NICU. Marissa Hughes' premature baby boy was being treated nine hours away from the family's home. Kyte Baby said they could only accommodate Hughes for two weeks as part of their maternity leave policy, and that she would be fired if she didn’t return to work. Hughes shared her story and the internet rallied behind her. The CEO, who made the call on Hughes’ request, said she was “insensitive” and “selfish” and offered to continue paying Hughes as if she were working remotely while she takes time to be with her baby.

(CNN or theSkimm Tue 1-23-24) India. Yesterday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated an unfinished temple for a Hindu god, prompting accusations that he’s stirring religious tensions.
NOT READ: Hindus and Muslims have long contested the temple’s holy site, which was once home to a historic mosque. In 1992, a Hindu mob destroyed the mosque during nationwide riots that killed about 2,000 people — most of them Muslims. India’s Hindus say the site is the birthplace of Lord Ram and was holy to them before Muslims built the mosque. Now, many say the temple is a move toward establishing Hindu supremacy in India and that Modi's using it for political gain ahead of elections in the spring.
