Israel-Hamas drama
(CNN & theSkimm Mon. 10/30/23) Israel is in its “second stage” of war against Hamas, week 4. On Friday, Israel carried out its second ground incursion into the Gaza Strip — Bibi wants to “destroy” Hamas, who’d reportedly killed more than 1,400 “mostly civilians” October 7th, kidnapping an estimated 230 others. After three weeks in which the two sides exchanged thousands of missiles and rockets, Israeli officials brought in tanks and soldiers to Gaza targeting hundreds of Hamas sites, command centers, missile launch sites. Palestinians described continuous airstrikes as the most intense since the start of the war.
Over the weekend, Gaza lost internet and cell service for over 24 hours amid bombardment. Blackout! — ambulances couldn't function, aid groups couldn't coordinate. People also broke into UN aid offices for hygiene supplies, flour, and wheat — aid’s been slow to enter the enclave. The Palestinian Health Ministry said over 8,000(!!) people killed since war began.
Evil UN emergency meeting today: the UAE wants a resolution on a “humanitarian pause” in the fighting, though Israel doesn’t wanna stop.
“Outrage” around the world, RME. Saturday, hundreds of thousands in Turkey flooded Istanbul streets — huge pro-Palestinian rally, also in London, Madrid, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, calling for immediate ceasefire.
Violence/threats across the globe: In Russia, a mob swarmed an airport in search of Jewish passengers fleeing Israel — causing the airport to close down and leaving Jewish communities shaken. HUH!
Mass shooting propaganda
(CNN not theSkimm Mon. 10/30/23) Cities across the US caught another gruesome weekend of gun violence (NO SUCH THING! PEOPLE VIOLENCE!) — just days after a 40-year-old male went on two shooting rampages in Lewiston, Maine, last Wednesday night, killing 18.
At least 580 “mass shootings” recorded this year across the country “alone,” 11 over the weekend, per “Gun Violence Archive” (no such thing).
An Indianapolis Halloween party ended with one killed, nine injured Sunday. Tampa, Florida, two dead, 16 injured, as hundreds filed out of bars and nightclubs. Chicago’s west side, 15 people shot Sunday morning. “Americans should not have to live like this,” joke of a “President” Joe Biden recently said, calling on Congress to address the scourge of mass shootings in the US. YES, CONGRESS, SAVE US! RME.
14th Amendment Trump disqualification trial begins in Colorado

(CNN or theSkimm Mon. 10/30/23) At least 43 people have died after Hurricane Otis tore through Acapulco, Mexico, as a devastating Category 5 storm last week, the region’s governor said Sunday. The popular tourist destination and iconic beaches in ruins — 80% of the hotels severely damaged, per Mexican government’s preliminary damage assessment. Satellite images show destruction by the storms’ 165 mph winds.
“This is a chaotic situation, a devastating scenario with unquantifiable damages,” said Jorge Laurel, former president of Acapulco Association of Hotels and Tourist Enterprises.
Matthew Perry
(CNN or theSkimm Mon. 10/30/23) Tributes pouring in for Matthew Perry. Many are still memorializing the 54-year-old “Friends” star who played Chandler Bing. The co-creators of “Friends” called this moment, “The One Where Our Hearts Are Broken.” Maggie Wheeler, who portrayed Chandler's ex Janice, said “the world will miss you.” Canadian PM Justin Trudeau, who went to school with Perry, said he’ll “never forget the schoolyard games” they would play. The news of Perry's death came almost one year after he published his memoir, opening up about his experience in Hollywood and his decades-long struggle with addiction. Investigators said there was no sign of foul play after Perry was reportedly found dead in a hot tub at his LA home on Saturday. Officials will be conducting an autopsy.
NOT READ: Matthew Perry, the beloved actor who starred as Chandler Bing on “Friends,” died Saturday at his Los Angeles home following an apparent drowning accident. He was 54. On Sunday, Perry’s family shared a statement saying that they were “heartbroken by the tragic loss of our beloved son and brother.” An autopsy has been conducted, but examiners are awaiting the results of toxicology reports to determine Perry’s cause of death, the city’s medical examiner’s office told CNN. Investigators will use the toxicology reports to determine whether any foreign substances may have contributed to his passing. The additional investigative steps come after Perry released a memoir last year about his recovery from addiction and his dedication to helping others titled, “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing: A Memoir.”
Iranian woman propaganda
(not CNN but theSkimm Mon. 10/30/23) Questions in Iran. Over the weekend, state media reported that 16-year-old Armita Geravand died. Earlier this month, human rights groups accused Iran’s morality police of beating Geravand on the Tehran subway for failing to wear a hijab, leaving her brain dead. Iran’s state news agency blamed her death on an injury after she collapsed after a drop in blood pressure. Geravand's death comes a little over a year after 22-year-old Mahsa Amini's death led to nationwide, women-led protests.
Biden deficit
(CNN or theSkimm Mon. 10/30/23) $1.7 trillion: That’s the US budget deficit, according to the latest data from the Treasury Department. Budget deficits happen when a government’s spending exceeds what it collects in taxes. Meanwhile, lawmakers have yet to sign off on a budget for most of the current fiscal year, but concerns are mounting over the possibility of funding the wars in Israel and Ukraine simultaneously. Financial experts say that would undoubtedly lead to more government spending and a higher deficit.
RIP Adam Johnson, white hockey player killed by black-on-white roughness
(Twitter, Wikipedia, Daily Mail) RIP to Minnesota-born Adam Johnson (ice hockey player), dead at 29, after a Canada-born black hockey player opponent Matt Petgrave, 31, apparently kicked him in the neck with his ice skate in a collision in the rink — his throat was slashed and he bled out and died Saturday night, I believe.
