Lame-o Joe “for” Israel

(CNN or theSkimm Wed. 10/11/23) President Biden made clear his administration stands with Israel. In a televised 10-minute address yesterday, Biden called Hamas’s attack on Israel “pure unadulterated evil.” He spoke about young people slaughtered at a music festival, infants and Holocaust survivors abducted, and women “assaulted, paraded as trophies.” As he put it, Hamas’s terrorism evoked “the worst rampages of ISIS.” Then he spoke about US hostages.

At least 20 “Americans” are still unaccounted for with 14 confirmed killed. Biden said there was “no higher priority” for his administration than their safe return. He also warned anyone or country thinking of taking advantage of the conflict: “don’t.” And he said “like every nation in the world, Israel has the right to respond.”

The admin is pushing for more aid to Israel from Congress. Biden didn’t urge Israel to show restraint in Gaza and said “there is no justification for terrorism.” He didn’t address whether he regrets releasing $6 billion in frozen funds to Iran in exchange for the release of five Americans.

In Gaza: Israel is now preparing for a ground invasion after carrying out hundreds of airstrikes that have left over 900 people dead. One man said an Israeli airstrike wiped out 19 members of his family. Palestinians in Gaza do not have bomb shelters and Israel is now carrying out a siege on water, food, and fuel.

In Israel: The death toll is now over 1,200 people — among the deadliest events in Israel’s history. Many are still trying to identify the dead and hostages while Hamas has continued to send 2,000 rockets. Meanwhile, the country is seeing an uptick in gunfire exchange at its northern border with Lebanon.

Why Wasn’t Israel Prepared?

The Israeli military is considered among the most advanced in the world — boasting a missile defense system, high-tech fence, radar technology, and underground sensors. Still, Hamas’s ground invasion allowed at least 1,500 Hamas militants to break through. Experts are attributing the lapse to:

Distraction: The government and military were focused on a recent wave of protests and attacks in the West Bank tied to expanding Israeli settlements. There were also threats of a potential war from the north, with concerns of Hezbollah militants attacking from Lebanon. The high-tech border with Gaza was reportedly minimally staffed, allowing explosions and bulldozers to simply push through.

Tech: Israel’s focus on high-tech and cybersecurity seemed to distract it from a more traditional, low-tech ground assault. Hamas went offline so that Israel’s intelligence couldn’t pick up their communications. That means face-to-face meetings and using couriers over cell phones. One source told Reuters Hamas practiced military landings on a mock Israeli settlement they built.

Military analysts and Israelis will grapple with the security failure on October 7 for years to come. Even US intelligence officials said they didn't see any signs of Hamas’s plans.

Israel-Hamas MESS (CNN)

(CNN or theSkimm Wed. 10/11/23) At least 1,200 people were killed in Israel in Hamas’ October 7 onslaught when armed militants poured over the border into Israel, raiding homes, rampaging through communities and taking as many as 150 hostages back to Gaza.

In retaliation for the “atrocities,” Israeli jets have been pounding Gaza — the densely inhabited coastal strip that Hamas controls — with hundreds of airstrikes, reducing neighborhoods to rubble. Officials say a “complete siege” has trapped residents, cutting them off from food, electricity and resources

Many survivors are in critical condition and struggling with an overwhelming emotional toll as a humanitarian crisis swiftly unfolds in the region.

Speaker vote today?

(CNN or theSkimm Wed. 10/11/23) The House. Today, the Republican conference is expected to vote on who to back as speaker. The House has been without a speaker since last week when eight Republicans voted out Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) for working with Democrats to avoid a government shutdown. Reps. Steve Scalise (R-LA) and Jim Jordan (R-OH) are facing off for the job. But the Ghost of Speakers Past might be sneaking in on them. Rumor has it that McCarthy's allies could be working to nominate him as speaker again. If the divided GOP can’t get behind one candidate, then some Republicans might have to reach across the aisle again to get Congress back to work.

(CNN or theSkimm Wed. 10/11/23) House Republicans are hoping to pick their candidate today for a new speaker following Kevin McCarthy’s dramatic ousting last week. On Tuesday night, a GOP candidate forum saw Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana giving their pitch as the best choice for the speakership, but some still say it will be difficult for either candidate to get the 217 votes needed to win the gavel. Rep. Mike Garcia of California, for example, said it was “50/50” on whether they would be able to elect a speaker today. House Democrats also held a similar conference to officially nominate their leader, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, for speaker.

Hurricane Lidia hit Mexico?

(CNN or theSkimm Wed. 10/11/23) Lidia has weakened into a tropical storm after making landfall in west-central Mexico Tuesday as an “extremely dangerous” Category 4 hurricane. The hurricane’s center slammed into the state of Jalisco, near Las Penitas, with maximum sustained winds of 140 mph and heavy rain, according to the National Hurricane Center. Forecasters say Lidia is expected to dump between 4 to 8 inches of rain — and even up to 12 inches in some areas — likely fueling flash flooding and mudslides in higher terrain.

Pray for George Santos

(CNN or theSkimm Wed. 10/11/23) New York Rep. George Santos is facing 10 new federal charges, including allegations of stealing donors’ identities and running up fraudulent credit card charges. He is already facing 13 other counts over alleged wire fraud, money laundering, theft of public funds and lying to the US House. Following the new indictment Tuesday, the Republican lawmaker said again that he won’t resign from Congress. Santos was part of a class of newly elected New York Republicans who helped the party win a narrow House majority in the 2022 midterms and whose fate will be key to holding that majority in 2024.

That imploded submarine

(CNN or theSkimm Wed. 10/11/23) 105 minutes the Titanic-bound Titan submersible was underwater before it suffered a catastrophic implosion in June. The US Coast Guard said Tuesday that the remaining debris from the disaster has been recovered — including presumed human remains.

cLiMaTe AnXiEtY

(CNN or theSkimm Wed. 10/11/23) QUOTE: “These are not issues that we can wait and resolve later. As a society, we must act now.” — Dr. Dennis P. Stolle, a senior director for the American Psychiatric Association, commenting on a new report that revealed climate change can have “lifelong impacts” on young people’s mental health. The study suggests extreme weather events and poor air quality can increase the risks of anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, aggression, cognitive impairment and more.

Gene editing vs the bird flu

(CNN or theSkimm Wed. 10/11/23) Chickens. Yesterday, scientists said they used gene editing tech called CRISPR on chickens to combat bird flu. Since 2022, more than 50 million birds have died because of the H5N1 virus. Just one chicken could have the virus, but the entire flock would need to get killed which could upset the food supply. Now, scientists are saying that by tweaking the genes of some chickens, they were able to make them resistant to the virus. Still, the researchers said “we’re not there yet” and more work is needed.

NOT READ: NASA: Space is REAL

(CNN or theSkimm Wed. 10/11/23) A sample collected from a near-Earth asteroid will be unveiled during a live NASA broadcast today. The sample’s historic landing in the Utah desert on September 24 marked the culmination of a seven-year mission, which traveled to the asteroid known as Bennu some 200 million miles from Earth and then flew back by Earth for the sample drop. The total trip distance was around 3.86 billion miles. Scientists believe that asteroids like Bennu might have delivered necessary elements such as water to Earth early in our planet’s formation, and studying the pristine sample could answer lingering questions about the origins of our solar system. NASA’s live broadcast will begin at 11 a.m. ET.
