  • Israel-Hamas hype: all the details from theSkimm (and some from CNN)  //

Watch out for fake news!

(CNN Tue. 10/10/23) X (Twitter)’s been rife with misinfo on the Israel-Hamas war. Many sharing false and misleading claims — Based Elon Musk himself promoted an account “known” for spreading fake reports — but corrected himself. (RICH COMING FROM COMMIE NONSENSE NETWORK)

Israel vs Palestine

(CNN Tue. 10/10/23) Israel is pounding Gaza with deadly airstrikes, displacing more than 100,000 people and sending waves of injured Palestinians to overwhelmed hospitals. At least 900 have died in Israel and more than 680 Palestinians killed since conflict erupted Saturday with Hamas’s surprise attack. 11 US citizens died in the attack, Corrupt Joe Biden said Monday, unknown number missing. Estimated 100-150 hostages in Gaza, per Israeli UN Ambassador Gilad Erdan. Hamas claimed more than 100 captives, including Israeli army officers.

Globohomo response

(theSkimm Tue. 10/10/23) The international community is racing to address the violence in Israel and Gaza. Yesterday, the US joined the UK, France, Germany, and Italy in a joint “pro-Israel” statement. The EU backtracked on pausing(??) $730 million in aid to Palestinians; they’ll review funding to ensure EU money’s not used in attacks (STUPID, reminds me of govt-funded Planned Parenthood money “doesn’t go to abortions,” SMH — all PR, public relations, nothing real). Qatar has backed Hamas and has ties to the US — reportedly trying to negotiate a hostage-prisoner swap. Then there’s Saudi Arabia and Iran.

Some believe Hamas timed the attacks to derail US-led negotiations between Israel and Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia had apparently signaled that they’d recognize Israel, which could pave the way for other Arab states to do the same. This may have set off alarm bells in Iran.

Iran and Israel have long been engaged in a shadow war. Israel has been trying to curb Iran’s power and disrupt its nuclear program, including through targeted attacks. Iran’s been accused of funding militant groups across the Middle East (like Hamas and Hezbollah) that have attacked Israelis. With Israel and Saudis nearing a deal, Iran may have felt vulnerable. Hamas’s attack could be the latest example, with some suggesting Iran helped them fund and plan it. Iran denied involvement. It’s put the US in a tough spot.

Republicans blame Biden for releasing $6 billion to Iran last month in exchange for the release of five Americans. Biden admin says funds are still untouched (IRRELEVANT — they know it’s there). Gonna be difficult for Congress to act (such as send military aid or pass a resolution) while the country is without a House speaker (NICE! GOOD! Congress does nothing good anyway!).

Death toll

(theSkimm Tue. 10/10/23)  The death toll in Israel and Gaza is mounting.

Israel: After infiltrating 22 towns, Hamas’s supposedly taken at least 150 Israelis hostage — including children, families, and the elderly. Now threatening to kill one hostage each time Israel sends a missile into Gaza targeting civilians “without warning.” Death toll has reached over 900 people, including 11 Americans with thousands injured — deadliest attack since the 1973 Arab-Israeli War. Israelis calling it their 9/11…

Gaza: Residents bracing for a potential ground invasion. Israel’s cut off food, water, gas, and electricity to the 25-mile-long Palestinian territory along Israel’s southwest border. The strip, home to more than 2 million people, under a 16-year blockade, with nowhere to go. Now, the death toll has reached over 600 people, with thousands injured. The violence comes after 2022 was already one of the deadliest years on record for Palestinians.

California banned peeps?! (Anti-Christian, anti-Easter!)

(CNN & theSkimm Tue. 10/10/23) … Over the weekend, California became the first state to ban four chemicals found in well-known candies like Peeps and Entenmann’s Little Bites. The chemicals are linked to cancer. Just in time for Halloween.

California ban including the common color additive red dye No. 3. … the first in the country to forbid the use of ingredients found in many popular candies, drinks and more, according to some environmental health organizations. Nearly 3,000 products use red dye No. 3 as an ingredient, including sweets such as Skittles, Nerds and Trolli gummies; protein shakes; instant rice and potato products; and boxed cake mixes. California Gov. Gavin Newsom said the bill won’t be implemented until 2027 to allow brands enough time to revise their recipes.

Afghanistan Earthquake aftermath

(CNN or theSkimm Tue. 10/10/23) Afghanistan. Yesterday, rescuers worked to search for survivors after a deadly earthquake hit the northwestern city of Herat. The Taliban said Saturday’s 6.3 magnitude quake killed at least 2,400 people and left hundreds injured and thousands displaced. The death toll is expected to rise and many survivors are awaiting food and medical aid. The earthquake comes as Afghanistan has struggled with a drop in international aid after the Taliban took control of the country.

Nobel Prize for "gEnDeR pAy GaP"

(CNN or theSkimm Tue. 10/10/23) The Nobel Prize in economics. Yesterday, Claudia Goldin won the prize for her research on the gender pay gap. Her 1990 book looks at the roots of the gender pay gap across 200 years of history and is being described as the first “comprehensive account” of women’s employment and pay.

China Virus hurts the old

(CNN or theSkimm Tue. 10/10/23) Older adults have accounted for nearly two-thirds of Covid-19 hospitalizations in the US this year, as concern grows over the population’s lack of vaccination. From January through August, US adults aged 65 and older accounted for around 63% of all Covid-19 hospitalizations, a recent report from the CDC shows. Most of those hospitalized had underlying health conditions, such as diabetes or kidney disorders — but only about 23% had received the bivalent vaccine that was recommended at the time. Health officials are encouraging eligible Americans to get the newly updated Covid-19 vaccine that became available this fall. The CDC has recommended the shot for everyone 6 months and older.

Flag football among new sports being considered for 2028 Olympics

(CNN or theSkimm Tue. 10/10/23) Olympic organizers have proposed five new sports for inclusion in the 2028 Games: baseball/softball, cricket, lacrosse, squash and flag football.
