TRUMP AD: BRING BACK THE DEATH PENALTY. BRING BACK OUR POLICE!
(Grok) The ad ran on May 1, 1989, in the Times, the Daily News, the Post, and Newsday. The attack was April 19. Meili was in a coma for 12 days, so the ad landed while she was still unconscious or just coming out of it. The Times that morning still described her as in a coma at Metropolitan Hospital. She has no memory of the ad or the attack.
It did not name the five. The headline was “BRING BACK THE DEATH PENALTY. BRING BACK OUR POLICE!” The lines people quote are these: “I want to hate these muggers and murderers. They should be forced to suffer and, when they kill, they should be executed for their crimes.” And: “I no longer want to understand their anger. I want them to understand our anger. I want them to be afraid.” He was answering Mayor Koch, who had said hate and rancor should be taken out of people’s hearts. The closing line was a message to “those who would murder our citizens and terrorize New York.”
So the sentiment is what you said, with one legal qualifier. He was calling for the death penalty for killers, and he was aiming that anger at the people who had done this to her and to the other victims that night. She did not die. New York had no death penalty then. The ad is not a formal demand that these five named defendants be executed for a non-fatal rape. Later retellings often compress it into “Trump called for the execution of the Central Park Five.” The text is broader and harsher than a sentencing memo, and less specific than that headline.
CENTRAL PARK 5: WILDING IN NYC
(Grok) On the night of April 19, 1989, about 30 teenagers went into the north end of Central Park and split into smaller groups. Over the next hour or two they chased, hit, and robbed other people in the park, including a male jogger who was badly beaten. One of them later called it “wilding.”
Five of those teenagers — Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana, and Korey Wise, then ages 14 to 16 — were arrested, along with others from the same crowd, including Steven Lopez. Two of them were already in custody before police knew that a woman jogger, Trisha Meili, had been found badly hurt and unconscious. She had been beaten, tied, and sexually assaulted, and she spent 12 days in a coma. She remembers nothing of the attack.
The five made statements after long police questioning. The questioning was mostly not recorded until the end. In the statements they placed themselves at her attack and described hitting or holding her, but the accounts disagree on the place, the weapon, and who did what. Juries convicted them in 1990. The convictions covered her attack and, for several of them, the beating and robbery of the male jogger. They served about 6 to 13 years.
In 2002 a convicted serial attacker, Matias Reyes, said he had assaulted Meili alone. He had not been with the group of 30. His DNA matched the only DNA from the assault, and none of the five’s DNA was found. The Manhattan district attorney asked a judge to throw out all of the convictions, including the ones for the other attacks, because the statements were too tangled to trust on any count. The judge did that on December 19, 2002, and dismissed the charges. The city later paid the five $41 million, without admitting the police had done anything wrong.
The district attorney’s office decided the five could not have been her attackers, because the timing put them at the other assaults and the injuries looked like one attack. A police panel the next year disagreed. It said Reyes’s claim to have acted alone was only his word, and that the more likely account was that some of the teenagers hit or grabbed her and Reyes attacked her too. No witness saw them with her. The DNA proves Reyes assaulted her. It does not prove he was the only person who did.
What is solid: the five were in the crowd that was attacking other people that night, some of them later admitted those other attacks, and Reyes was a separate man whose DNA is the only DNA in her case. What is still argued: whether any of the five also took part in the attack on her.
