Trump Evacuated After Shots Fired at White House Correspondents' Dinner
On Saturday, an armed suspect opened fire at The Washington Hilton during The White House Correspondents dinner, prompting Secret Service agents to swiftly evacuate President Donald Trump.
Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, allegedly carried a shotgun and handgun into the hotel and faces charges including assaulting an officer with a dangerous weapon.
One officer was shot but remained protected by a bulletproof vest, while President Trump praised the Secret Service's quick response, calling the incident 'shocking' and the suspect a 'lone wolf whack job.'
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche promised 'justice will be served,' while Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser stated there is 'no reason' to believe any other individuals were involved.
Trump vowed to reschedule the event within 30 days, as The Washington Hilton previously saw security tightened after an attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan in 1981.
Trump safe, suspect in custody — This event marked Trump's first attendance as president, highlighting his contentious relationship with the press.
Cole Thomas Allen Identified as Suspect
Trump says Correspondents' dinner shooting suspect wrote anti-Christian manifesto — Sent to his family 10 minutes before the attack, Allen's manifesto dubbed him the "Friendly Federal Assassin" and detailed plans to kill Trump administration officials, according to law enforcement officials.
Trump calls for unity and bipartisan healing after another violent incident
Officials described Allen as appearing to act alone, though some intelligence figures have publicly questioned that narrative.
One Secret Service agent was struck by a bullet but survived thanks to his bulletproof vest. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche announced that charges would be filed "shortly" against the suspect.
President Trump struck an unusually conciliatory tone during an impromptu briefing, calling on Americans to "recommit" and resolve their differences peacefully after the incident. He noted the dinner was intended to unite members of both parties.
This marks the third assassination attempt on Trump since July 2024, following incidents in Butler, Pennsylvania, and West Palm Beach, Florida. Trump suggested that "the most impactful people" face unique threats, framing the pattern as a sign of his presidency's success.

CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer, who was outside the main ballroom at the time, reported being only a few feet away from the gunman when the shots were fired. Blitzer described the shooter as firing what appeared to be "a very serious weapon" at least six times before being tackled and taken to the ground by police. Blitzer was ushered to safety in a nearby restroom by officers.[7]
The gunman sustained a single knee injury from the tackle, for which he was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.[15]
UFC CEO Dana White was present and claims to have ignored commands from authorities to "get down".[20] White House deputy chief of staff Dan Scavino[21][22] unsuccessfully attempted to start a "U-S-A!" chant as Trump was escorted out and others began filming inside the ballroom.[23]
According to Federal Election Commission records, Allen donated $25 to a Democratic Party PAC, ActBlue, for Kamala Harris's presidential campaign in October 2024.[30][2]
Family members who were interviewed by investigators said that Allen "made radical statements and that he constantly referenced a plan to do 'something' to fix the issues with today's world", that he was part of a group called "The Wide Awakes", attended No Kings protests in California, and would regularly go to a shooting range to train with firearms.[2] Prior to the shooting, Allen's brother who lives in New London, Connecticut, notified the New London Police Department about the alleged manifesto that he sent to his family members.[36] Secret Service agents also reportedly interviewed Allen's sister in Rockville, Maryland, saying that her brother's thinking on the current state of the world revolved partially around "politics, Christians, misandry, and racism".[36]
Revolver/Daily Mail — Named high-ranking targets just minutes before opening fire…
According to the New York Post, Allen's manifesto read: 'Turning the other cheek is for when you yourself are oppressed. I'm not the person raped in a detention camp. I'm not the fisherman executed without trial.
'I'm not a schoolkid blown up or a child starved or a teenage girl abused by the many criminals in this administration. Turning the other cheek when *someone else* is oppressed is not Christian behavior; it is complicity in the oppressor's crimes.
'In order to minimize casualties, I will also be using buckshot rather than slugs (less penetration through walls).
'I would still go through most everyone here to get to the targets if it were absolutely necessary (on the basis that most people *chose* to attend a speech by a pedophile, rapist, and traitor, and are thus complicit) but I really hope it doesn't come to that.'
His targets included 'administration officials (not including [FBI Director Kash] Patel): they are targets, prioritized from highest-ranking to lowest.'
Allen wrote, allegedly referencing the president: 'I am no longer willing to permit a pedophile, rapist, and traitor to coat my hands with his crimes.'
