Trust no human being. Human nature is evil. (Healthline) Men comprise nearly 80% of suicides. You don’t have to listen to the voices. All thoughts are all lies, all the time, about anything. Woman encourages man to commit suicide; he left a note saying, Maybe she was right. …  //

*State of the Union

(CNN or theSkimm Fri 3-8-24)

Reproductive health care…Biden vowed to restore the nationwide right to an abortion if reelected. He urged lawmakers to protect IVF nationally, amid the backlash surrounding the Alabama Supreme Court’s decision. He directly addressed women’s political power, saying they’ll vote to defend reproductive freedoms. It comes as one poll found 17% of female voters under 50 say abortion is their No. 1 issue in the election.

The economy…Americans generally have a pessimistic view of it, but Biden tried to focus on job growth, cooling inflation, and his admin's efforts to boost infrastructure and manufacturing. He also acknowledged high housing costs, saying he would work to pass a tax credit to help homeowners. Biden said part of creating a booming economy is focusing on education.

The Israel-Hamas war…Biden vowed the US would not rest until all the remaining hostages, who were taken by Hamas on Oct 7, are brought home. He said Israel has the right to defend itself against Hamas but also has a responsibility to protect innocent civilians. Biden announced the US military would be building a temporary port on Gaza’s coast to deliver humanitarian aid. It comes amid UN warnings that at least a quarter of Gaza’s 2.3 million population is on the brink of famine. Biden also faces growing pressure from within the Democratic Party and from voters to address the humanitarian crisis and back a cease-fire.

*Uvalde

(CNN or theSkimm Fri 3-8-24) Families of the victims of the May 2022 school massacre in Uvalde, Texas, are furious after an independent investigator tasked with probing the police response cleared all local officers of wrongdoing. Jesse Prado, a retired Austin police detective and the investigator in question, delivered his report to a packed city council meeting yesterday and was immediately met with criticism. Prado said the officers at the scene acted in good faith, despite multiple agencies having previously agreed law enforcement botched its response to the massacre.

“You said that they did it in good faith. You call that good faith? They stood there 77 minutes and waited after they got call after call that kids were still alive in there,” [NOT READ…] Veronica Mata, whose 10-year-old daughter Tess was killed, said in response. The report was part of a quest for accountability by families of the victims — one that has seemed increasingly elusive over the last two years.

**Spring forward

(CNN or theSkimm Fri 3-8-24) Friendly reminder that this weekend is the beginning of Daylight Saving Time. Telling you a few days in advance gives you the opportunity to forget it by Sunday morning and wake up in a panic anyway.

*Big fire’s cause…

(CNN or theSkimm Fri 3-8-24) Where there could be some answers… Texas. Yesterday, state forest officials said power lines ignited the largest fire in Texas history. The blaze killed at least two people and thousands of livestock, burned more than 1 million acres, and destroyed hundreds of homes. While an investigation is ongoing, the utility provider Xcel Energy said its facilities appear to have been involved in the fire, which has largely been contained. The company denied allegations it was operating its equipment negligently. In recent years, other utility companies have been accused of playing a role in sparking the wildfires in Maui and California.

**Women invading and complaining in car racing!

(CNN or theSkimm Fri 3-8-24) What’s been in the headlines… Red Bull Racing. All eyes have been on the top Formula 1 team after its team principal, Christian Horner, was accused of inappropriate and controlling behavior by a female colleague. Horner has denied any wrongdoing. Last week, Red Bull dismissed the complaint against him. The details of the allegations haven't been made public, but yesterday media outlets reported the racing team suspended the woman who made the allegations. This off-track attention has prompted calls for Horner's removal. Other F1 team principals have demanded greater transparency into the investigation. The head of the F1’s governing body called the controversy “damaging” to the sport.

*TikTok ban?

(CNN or theSkimm Fri 3-8-24) A powerful House committee advanced a bill on Thursday that could lead to a nationwide ban against TikTok on all electronic devices. The House Energy and Commerce Committee unanimously approved the measure, which would prohibit TikTok from US app stores unless the social media platform is quickly spun off from its China-linked parent company, ByteDance. If enacted, the bill would give ByteDance 165 days, or a little more than five months, to sell the app. Lawmakers have long sought to challenge TikTok, in part due to unresolved fears that the platform may pose a Chinese government spying risk. About 170 million Americans use TikTok, meaning any restrictive legislation would cause huge tremors across the cultural landscape.

NOT READ

*NOT READ: *Hong Kong mess

(CNN or theSkimm Fri 3-8-24) Hong Kong’s government has unveiled new security laws that critics and foreign governments warn could deepen ongoing crackdowns in the city. The bill outlines a range of new national security crimes, including treason, espionage, external interference and disclosure of state secrets, with the most serious offenses punishable by potential life imprisonment. China and Hong Kong’s leaders say the laws are needed to “restore stability” following huge democracy protests in 2019. However, critics say the laws could easily ensnare political criticism, dissent and even business activity that would not be criminalized elsewhere. A previous attempt to pass this suite of laws sparked protests in 2003, but now, things are much different. Many of the city’s leading pro-democracy figures are in jail or have fled, and the city’s legislature has been cleared of any pro-democracy opposition.
