  • RIP Joe Lieberman  //  NYC gals getting punched in the face, allegedly  //  They wanna jail that soccer team president for kissing that women (2.5 years!!!)  //

*RIP Joe Lieberman

(CNN or theSkimm Thu 3-28-24) Former Sen. Joe Lieberman, the first Jewish vice-presidential nominee of a major party, died Wednesday in New York due to complications from a fall. He was 82. The Democrat-turned-Independent was chosen by presidential nominee Al Gore in 2000 as his running mate. The disputed election was eventually decided by the Supreme Court in favor of then-Texas Gov. George W. Bush. (WHEW, THAT WAS A CLOSE ONE…)

**Don’t punch women in the face unjustifiably

(CNN or theSkimm Thu 3-28-24) Women in NYC are sharing stories about getting punched in the face.

In recent weeks, TikTok has been flooded with videos of women saying they were randomly attacked in broad daylight while walking in NYC. The videos have racked up over 10 million views. Many of the women said they were looking at their phones when a man punched them in the head. New York police are investigating and said they arrested a [BLACK*] male suspect yesterday, but it's unclear if he's connected to any other incidents. The NYPD has not indicated whether these attacks are part of an increase in violent crime against women in the city. Still, women are now adding ‘walking in broad daylight’ to the laundry list of things they have to worry about.

*Fringe political candidate who ran for NYC mayor accused of sucker-punching TikTokker (NY Post 3/27, 2pm) — Freedom Party

(NY Post 3/27 6pm) Women sucker-punched on NYC streets reveal their shock, fear with at least one attacker still at large — On Wednesday 40-year-old Brooklyn man, Skiboky Stora (Marcus Garvey’s great great grandson, he calls himself on IG), was arrested and charged with assault for allegedly punching influencer Halley Kate Mcgookin in the face while she was walking along West 16th Street and Seventh Avenue on Monday.

But at least one other perpetrator — and possible more — are still on the loose.

It's not just NYC-based women who are concerned about their safety. Women across the US have shared their stories on social media, expressing how they feel the need to stay hypervigilant at all times — and how it's exhausting. They're also swapping safety tips...which really shouldn't have to be a thing. Women who travel solo have gone viral for their tips on staying safe at a hotel. Others have said they put men's work boots at their door to deter invaders. Even exercise requires being on high alert — a survey from Adidas found that 92% of women feel some concern for their safety while on a run.

theSkimm: The recent incidents in NYC have reminded many that women take on the undue burden of ensuring their own personal safety at all times — and not enough measures are taken to protect them. (GET MARRIED.)

  • Invasion pushed by federal judges!  //  Women pushing “child care benefits” so they can work at companies and not be mothers  //  They found two bodies after the bridge collapse (4 still missing as of early this AM)  //  NOT READ: Gaza drama  //

*Invasion

(CNN or theSkimm Thu 3-28-24) A controversial Texas law that allows state officials to arrest and detain migrants they suspect of entering the country illegally will remain blocked while legal challenges to it play out. In a 2-1 vote, a federal appeals court said the law, known as SB 4, will continue to be blocked while the court considers the larger question of whether it violates the US Constitution. The law has raised concerns among immigration advocates of increased racial profiling as well as detentions and attempted deportations by state authorities in Texas, where Latinos represent 40% of the population. SB 4 has been in limbo after the Supreme Court last week allowed it to go into effect for a short period, only for the appeals court panel to put it back on hold hours later.

**Yay not raising your children, ladies!

(CNN or theSkimm Thu 3-28-24) Child care benefits. A new report found companies that offered child care benefits to their employees saw up to a 425% return on their investment (OH, LORD). Researchers looked at five companies of various sizes, including UPS and Etsy, that provided benefits like emergency onsite daycare and stipends. They found that for every dollar spent on child care benefits, companies earned between roughly a dollar and $4.25 back through reduced absences, lateness, and lower rates of attrition. Still, experts have described the report as limited and said more research is needed. The findings come as child care costs continue to climb, while the government drags its feet on universal child care legislation — leaving it up to the private sector to step up for working parents.

*Bridge collapse

(CNN or theSkimm Thu 3-28-24) The bodies of two of the six construction workers who died after a cargo ship hit a pillar of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge have been recovered. Search efforts have been paused for the four other workers, who are presumed dead. An assessment of the incident found that the ship’s crew first signaled trouble with the vessel when a pilot radioed for help from tugboats at about 1:26 a.m. ET Tuesday — just about three minutes before the ship hit a bridge column, the National Transportation Safety Board said, citing data from a voyage recorder. The investigation into the collision could take up to two years, according to NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy. In the meantime, the flow of ships in and out of Baltimore has been halted indefinitely.

**Gaza drama

(CNN or theSkimm Thu 3-28-24) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has told members of the US Congress that “victory” in Gaza is “a few weeks away” as Israel pushes forward with its planned offensive in the region. Netanyahu added that Israel “had no choice” but to move into Rafah — where more than one million people are sheltering — because the country’s “very existence is on the line.” Disagreements over the impending invasion of Rafah have driven relations between Netanyahu and President Joe Biden to a low point

NOT READ: Meanwhile, a UN expert in the Palestinian territories says there are “reasonable grounds” to believe Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. Israel said it “utterly rejects” the report, which it said “brings shame” to the UN Human Rights Council.
