*Putin wins!

(CNN or theSkimm Mon 3-18-24) Vladimir Putin just won his fifth term as Russia’s president.

He’s been in power since 2000. Yesterday, Russian officials said Putin earned nearly 90% of the vote in the country’s presidential elections. Though, many Western leaders say the elections were neither free nor fair. From the beginning, the Russian president’s path toward victory was preordained, with the Kremlin barring any serious challengers and coercing people to vote. Now, Putin has extended his grip on the country for at least six more years and is the longest-serving Russian leader since Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin.

Putin is vowing to press ahead with the war in Ukraine, continuing a confrontation with the West. Meanwhile, there is growing concern that Putin’s authoritarian hold will only mean more oppression in Russia. The Kremlin has cracked down on independent media, has put many of Putin’s critics in jail, and the opposition movement recently lost its most vocal leader Alexei Navalny. Still, many aren’t backing down. Dozens were arrested after protesting the elections over the weekend, with some pouring paint in ballot boxes and setting voting booths on fire. Thousands of people also lined up at polling stations in Russia and abroad for the so-called “Noon Against Putin” demonstrations, fulfilling a request Navalny made before his death.

  Related Stories:

CNN: Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to tighten his grip on the country he has ruled since the turn of the century as early results from a stage-managed election indicate a predictably large victory for the Kremlin leader. With over 99% of ballots counted, Putin amassed more than 87% of the vote, according to preliminary results reported earlier today by Russia’s Central Election Commission. In his Sunday evening address, Putin also made an unprecedented break with his tradition of not uttering Alexey Navalny’s name, discussing his death and confirming discussions over a potential prisoner swap involving the late opposition figure. Navalny’s allies had previously claimed he was “days away” from being exchanged before his death.

**Trump bashers!

(CNN or theSkimm Mon 3-18-24) Mischaracterizing Former President Donald Trump. Over the weekend, Trump sparked outrage after he said some immigrants are "not people" during a campaign speech in Ohio. His dehumanizing words are drawing parallels to rhetoric he's used in the past, including when he called Mexicans "rapists." Trump's comments come as immigration shapes up to be a top issue in this year's presidential election. In his speech, Trump also warned it would be a “bloodbath for the country” if he’s not elected, and that it would “be the least of it.” In a statement, President Biden's campaign said Trump's comments doubled down on “threats of political violence.”

…Oh and speaking of Trump, former VP Mike Pence said that he “will not be endorsing” his former boss ahead of the November election. SOUNDS PRETTY EVIL!

CNN: … During a rally in Ohio on Saturday, Trump warned that if he were to lose the 2024 election, it would be a “bloodbath” for the US auto industry and the country. The remark came as Trump promised a “100% tariff” on cars made outside the US, arguing that domestic auto manufacturing would be protected only if he is elected. Meanwhile, Biden’s campaign said it brought in $53 million in February, a sign of accelerating donor interest. Fundraising has been a bright spot for Biden’s reelection effort, even as he battles low approval ratings and some polls showing him trailing Trump in key battleground states

Pollen going around — allergies, anyone?

(CNN or theSkimm Mon 3-18-24) A California superbloom is springing to life and will soon blanket some of the state’s dry landscape in vivid displays of abundant wildflowers. The colorful blooms, however, are notoriously sensitive to weather conditions — so there could be a short window to bask in their beauty.

Freeze watch

(CNN or theSkimm Mon 3-18-24) Tuesday marks the official start of spring in the Northern Hemisphere after the warmest winter on record.

NOT READ: However, more than half the US population this week will experience temperatures at or below freezing. The chilly weather will be a shock for many in the eastern half of the country that experienced warmer-than-average temperatures this past week. The cold system is expected to ultimately creep into the Midwest, progressing south and east with time, while New York is set to drop to 45 degrees Tuesday, forecasts show. Temperatures in the Southeast Tuesday morning will be 10 to 15 degrees below normal for this time of the year. Several major cities, including Atlanta, Charlotte, and Birmingham, Alabama, are all expected to see temperatures drop into the low 30s by Tuesday morning.

**Based Bibi vs un-christian Chuck Schumer

(CNN or theSkimm Mon 3-18-24) QUOTE: “I think what he said is totally inappropriate.” — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, responding to comments from Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer calling for new elections in Israel. Schumer, who is normally a staunch supporter of Israel, called Netanyahu a “major obstacle to peace.”

*Haiti

(CNN or theSkimm Mon 3-18-24) Growing unrest in Haiti. Yesterday, the first charter flight carrying dozens of Americans fleeing violence in Haiti landed in Miami. The State Department said it would offer a limited number of flights amid ongoing gang violence that has overwhelmed Haiti and recently forced Prime Minister Ariel Henry to resign. Gangs have taken nearly all control of the capital Port-Au-Prince. The violence has also led many aid groups to stop operating, raising fears of a famine.

**Marriage down (but went “up” after a marked drop, SMH), divorce stats changing

(CNN or theSkimm Mon 3-18-24) What’s taking a dip… The divorce rate. CNN: Marriage rates are up, and divorce rates are down Some experts believe the Covid-19 pandemic could have helped couples lay a better groundwork for a stable future. OH LORD….

After Covid-19 lockdowns, 2022 was a year of marriages, according to new data (reports Madeline Holcombe, mildly attractive CNN writer for “Science and Wellness”).

The number of marriages took a dive around the start of the pandemic, numbers show. For the past two decades, the number of marriages stayed around 7 to 8 per 1,000 people a year, according to new data released by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics.

But in 2020, the marriage rate was down to 5.1 per 1,000 people, the data showed. The rate started to climb the next year, and by 2022, the number of marriages had reached 6.2 per capita (SHE MEANS PER 1000, not per head, SM_H) — and over 2 million in a year, according to the report.

NOT READ:

**Social Media in Supreme Court

(CNN or theSkimm Mon 3-18-24) The Supreme Court is set to debate whether the White House VIOLATES the First Amendment in trying to thwart social media “disinformation.” Biden admin officials have for years persuaded social media platforms such as Facebook and X to take down posts that include misinformation about vaccines, the Covid-19 pandemic and the 2020 election, among other things.

But the Supreme Court must now decide whether those efforts go too far — when the government, in other words, veers into censorship on social media that violates the First Amendment. The case could prove pivotal to the 2024 election. Its outcome could determine whether the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) can legally flag posts to social media companies that may be the work of foreign disinformation agents seeking to disrupt the race. (RME!)

*Volcano eruption

(CNN or theSkimm Mon 3-18-24) Iceland’s world-famous Blue Lagoon and the nearby town of Grindavik were evacuated Saturday following a volcanic eruption in the country’s Reykjanes Peninsula. Anti-lava barriers outside Grindavik are holding and there has been no damage to critical infrastructure since the eruption, a spokeswoman for Iceland’s civil protection agency told CNN Sunday. Iceland is one of the most active volcanic areas on the planet. Rather than having a central volcano, the Reykjanes Peninsula is dominated by a rift valley with lava fields and cones.

*Lotto

(CNN or theSkimm Mon 3-18-24) The Mega Millions lottery jackpot has climbed to $875M following 28 consecutive drawings with no ticket matching all six numbers, according to Mega Millions.
