(CNN not theSkimm Thu 2-15-24) Security experts are raising concerns about artificial intelligence and how it can be used to spread misinformation ahead of the 2024 presidential election. Congress, however, doesn’t appear ready to pass any major legislation on AI before Americans head to the polls in less than nine months.

**KC super bowl parade shooting (black)

(CNN & theSkimm OF COURSE Thu 2-15-24) Where people are mourning… Kansas City. “Another American community is reeling…” Yesterday, a shooting at the end of the [Indian] Chiefs' Super Bowl victory parade left one person dead Wednesday and 22 others injured, including at least eight children. It’s still not clear what happened, but authorities said they took three people into custody, two of whom were armed (no suspects named as of earlier this AM). Police are working to determine who opened fire and what motivated the attack that sent crowds of fans running and taking cover. CNN wants you to know: The incident was at least the 48th mass shooting in the US this year.

The parade attracted at least 1 million attendees (gathered just steps away from Union Station in downtown Kansas City). Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes posted on X, “Praying for Kansas City.” The Kansas City Chiefs organization called the shooting a “senseless act of violence.” President Biden said the shooting “cuts deep in the American soul” and called on Congress to pass gun reform legislation.

*Invasion (money-grubbing SCAM)

(CNN not theSkimm Thu 2-15-24) The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency is facing a dire budget shortfall as agents report record levels of migrants at the US-Mexico border. ICE has drafted contingency plans to cut detention capacity and release thousands of immigrants as a result. The agency has historically been underfunded and is now staring down a $700 million deficit, a source told CNN, resulting in discussions that include slashing detention space. President Joe Biden has repeatedly implored Congress to give him more resources to deal with the situation at the southern border, assigning blame on Republicans for not doing more. The White House has asked for $14 billion in border security funding as part of a broader national security request but many GOP lawmakers are aiming to block the package from advancing.

This week, an Oklahoma radio station changed its tune and played Queen B’s new country single “Texas Hold ‘Em.” It comes after the station originally said it couldn’t play the song because it’s a “country music station” — prompting a wave of criticism. It’s sparked a larger conversation about racial diversity in country music.

(CNN or theSkimm Thu 2-15-24) Israeli special forces have entered Nasser Hospital in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis after receiving “credible intelligence from a number of sources, including from released hostages,” that Hamas had previously held hostages at the hospital, the Israel Defense Forces said. The move comes a day after hundreds of civilians were forced by Israeli forces to leave the hospital, which they had been using as a shelter. Meanwhile, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday reiterated his intention to order concerted military operations in Rafah, Gaza’s most populated city. A growing number of world leaders have called on Israel to avoid a ground operation in the region, but Netanyahu has vowed that his country will fight “until the absolute victory.”

(CNN or theSkimm Thu 2-15-24) Russia can sustain its war effort in Ukraine an estimated 3 additional years, according to a new "report." Analysts cautioned it “may be even longer,” but explained that Russian forces will have to sacrifice “quality for quantity” as they replace destroyed or damaged weapons with older systems held in storage.

(CNN or theSkimm Thu 2-15-24) warning bells… from The CDC. The agency said at least 128 pregnant women and 25 children under the age of two got the wrong RSV vaccines. Last year, two vaccines were made available for the first time ever to protect against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), a disease that's pretty common but can be especially dangerous for infants and older adults. However, only one RSV vaccine (Pfizer’s Abrysvo) was approved for use in pregnancy. Experts reportedly said doctors might've confused the vaccines because their names are similar [NOT READ…] (the other vaccine's name is Arexvy). Others apparently thought the shots were interchangeable. There is reportedly little to no information on how using the wrong RSV vaccine could affect pregnant people and young kids, since it hasn’t been studied. The CDC said there hasn’t been any confirmation of serious harm.

(CNN or theSkimm Thu 2-15-24) QUOTE: “We take such vandalism very seriously and we will insist that the perpetrators be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.” — Colleen Shogan, an archivist of the United States, issuing a statement Wednesday after two people dumped red powder on the display that protects the US Constitution. No damage was done to the document itself, the National Archives said, adding officials are investigating the incident.

*Trump trial

(CNN or theSkimm Thu 2-15-24) Former President Donald Trump is expected to attend a hearing today in his New York hush money case. A state judge could rule on whether his first trial will begin on March 25, as originally scheduled, on charges that Trump falsified business records with the intent to conceal illegal conduct connected to his 2016 presidential campaign. A scheduled date would begin to solidify Trump’s legal calendar, which is filling up at the same time that his 2024 campaign is closing in on the GOP nomination for president. If convicted on the counts of falsifying business records, which are a class E felony, Trump could face up to four years in prison. But as a first-time offender, he would unlikely be sentenced to prison time. It would make him a convicted felon regardless of his sentence.

(CNN or theSkimm Thu 2-15-24) The Odysseus lunar lander, nicknamed “Odie,” has embarked on a historic journey to the moon — aiming to make the first touchdown of a US-made spacecraft on the lunar surface in five decades. Odie underwent years of development by Houston-based company Intuitive Machines and finally lifted off after 1:00 a.m. ET from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. NASA has ramped up the development of robotic spacecraft via private partners to evaluate the lunar environment and identify key resources — such as the presence of water — before it attempts to return astronauts to the moon later this decade. Odie is slated to make its nail-biting touchdown attempt on February 22. China, India and Japan are so far the only nations to have soft-landed vehicles on the moon in the 21st century.

(CNN or theSkimm Thu 2-15-24) What could have the gym bros in a tizzy… Beef rice. Yesterday, a new study showed researchers created a new type of hybrid rice using beef muscle and fat cells. Why? Researchers think it'll have a significantly lower carbon footprint and be a more cost-effective source of protein than conventional beef. As for taste, the lead researcher hyped it up as a “pleasant and novel” experience. Critics say the rice would need to be supplemented with other forms of protein or provide a higher amount in order to replace meat.

*Russian space threat, per House official

(CNN or theSkimm Thu 2-15-24) A leading House official is sounding the alarm over an alleged Russian space threat. Yesterday, House Intel Committee chair Rep. Mike Turner (R-OH) issued a rare public warning, urging lawmakers to review a “serious national security threat.” He also called on President Biden to declassify the information so lawmakers, the White House, and allies could “openly discuss the actions necessary to respond.” …

This info isn’t yet declassified. Still, sources for ABC and the Washington Post indicate this may be about a Russian threat to detonate nuclear weapons in space, potentially targeting satellites and harming communications. Sources say the satellite is still in development and hasn’t been deployed. It's worth noting the Outer Space Treaty of 1976 — which Russia, the US, and the UK signed — bans all nuclear weapons in space.

The US has reportedly filled in its European allies on the matter. National security adviser Jake Sullivan said he’s planning to brief the Gang of Eight today — referring to top congressional leadership from both parties, including the intel committee leaders. Meanwhile, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) said there is “no need for public alarm.” Rep. Jim Himes (D-CT), a ranking member on the Intel Committee, described the classified info as “significant,” but “not a cause for concern.”

This amid Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine and an uncertain future for NATO.
