Chin up, Tesla kings!

(CNN or theSkimm Fri 1-26-24) Shares in Tesla plunged as much as 12% on Thursday, wiping $80 billion off the company’s market value hours after it warned of slowing growth in electric car sales. In the face of intensifying competition from global rivals, Tesla also recently lost the lead in global EV sales to Chinese automaker BYD. GET YOUR BYD!

Anti-white UN vs Israel

(CNN or theSkimm Fri 1-26-24) The evil UN’s silly “International Court of Justice” is expected to deliver their self-important ruling today on whether to enact provisional measures to temporarily suspend Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. This comes after anti-white South Africa (of all countries, ironically) accused Israel of genocide in an unprecedented (meaning ridiculous) case at the so-called “court” earlier this month, saying the country’s leadership was “intent on destroying the Palestinians in Gaza.” Israel has rejected the accusations, calling them “false” and “grossly distorted.” South Africa has asked the court to enforce “provisional measures” to protect the rights of Palestinians in Gaza “from imminent and irreparable loss.” The measures would function as a kind of restraining order to pause the conflict while the full case progresses through the court, which could take years. WHAT A JOKE.

Trump trial (speaking of joke trials)

(CNN or theSkimm Fri 1-26-24) Closing arguments will begin today in former President Donald Trump’s civil defamation trial to determine how much he will have to pay writer / silly gal E. Jean Carroll. The former magazine columnist alleged (without evidence) Trump raped her in a department store in the mid-1990s and then defamed her when he denied her claim (so she gets to try to defame him all she wants tho, ok).

In a separate trial last year, a civil jury made the pretend-finding Trump “sexually assaulted” (or s-ly abused) E Jean Carroll and defamed her (Uh, no she defamed herself) in 2022 statements.

Trump briefly took the stand on Thursday to deny the claims as he seeks to avoid a multimillion-dollar joke of a jury verdict against him. He also sought to advance the narrative that he is the victim of a broad conspiracy designed to block his return to the White House (YES) and damage his personal and business reputation.

Record Fog in the USA

(CNN or theSkimm Fri 1-26-24) More than 90 million people across the US were impacted by dense fog on Thursday — and the conditions will likely persist in several cities today, forecasts show. The fog this week stretched from the Canadian border to the Mexican border and reached as far east as the Northeast. A few alerts were also active along the West Coast. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday were three of the foggiest days in terms of forecast zones covered in nearly two decades, one meteorologist told CNN. The fog follows a week of severe weather featuring ice, snow, rain and a dramatic warmup for much of the country. This evaporation is overloading the air near the surface with moisture and creating thick fog that continues to lower visibility levels.

Cyberattacks (aka HACKING, etc)

(CNN or theSkimm Fri 1-26-24) Multiple Ukrainian state agencies, including its energy firm and postal service, reported cyberattacks on Thursday that affected their IT systems and ability to communicate with the public. Ukrainian cyber officials told CNN they were investigating the string of disruptions, which they said appeared to be the result of a cyberattack on a prominent data center in Ukraine that the agencies rely on. The news follows a separate incident on Tuesday in which hackers caused the heating system at a power company in the Western city of Lviv to malfunction, leaving some residents without heat or hot water. It was not immediately clear who was responsible for the hacking incidents, although Russian state-backed hackers have launched an array of cyberattacks against Ukrainian critical infrastructure in recent months.

Alabama Nitrogen Gas Execution

(CNN or theSkimm Fri 1-26-24) S/O Alabama. Yesterday, it became the first state in the country to carry out an execution using nitrogen gas. Kenneth Eugene Smith, who was convicted in 1989 for the murder-for-hire of Elizabeth Sennett, died 22 minutes after breathing in pure nitrogen gas through a mask. His death comes after the Supreme Court denied two requests to stop the execution, with Smith’s lawyers arguing it could violate the Constitution's ban on cruel and unusual punishment. Alabama is one of three states that's approved nitrogen hypoxia as an execution method, as some states face a national shortage of lethal injections. In a final statement, Smith said Alabama caused “humanity to take a step backwards.” Sennett's son reportedly said Smith had “to pay for what he’s done.”

Children are bums

(CNN or theSkimm Fri 1-26-24) What may not be the norm for many parents…Being empty nesters. A new report found that more than half of adults between 18 and 24 live with a parent. That's as 59% of parents said they've helped foot the bill on some of their adult children's expenses. It comes as many young adults are carrying student loan debt and dealing with a high-cost of living.

...Oh and speaking of the economy, it beat expectations, growing by 3.3% in Q4 (WHATEVER THAT MEANS). On the up and up (NO IT’S NOT).

TheSkimm is all about so-called “sex work” but NOT LIKE THAT

(CNN or theSkimm Fri 1-26-24) Viral AI fakes of Taylor Swift are putting the spotlight on deepfake porn

In recent years, dozens of websites have reportedly grown to host more than 200,000 nonconsensual deepfake porn videos using people’s images. It’s an issue that’s only accelerated as AI continues to become more mainstream, with face-swapping and so-called undressing apps on the rise. Last year, deepfake porn videos reportedly reached an estimated 4.2 billion views. Researchers think the vast majority — over 90% — target women and are nonconsensual.

A handful of states — including California, New York, Virginia, and Minnesota — have laws against the distribution of deepfakes or give victims the right to file civil suits (i.e. sue). But there’s currently no federal law banning deepfake porn, something some senators are trying to change. It’s far from the only sexually exploitative issue online: the FBI last week warned that sextortion is on the rise. With revenge porn and AI’s tendency toward racism and sexism, many experts say there's reason to be concerned.

Social media leaders and lawmakers are playing catch up with emerging tech. In the meantime, if one of the world’s most influential figures can’t protect her digital image, it leaves many wondering: what hope is there for everyone else?
