Abortions on the rise

(theSkimm Fri. 9/8/23) Abortions across the country are on the rise. Yesterday, a new “study” found about a 10% increase in abortions in the first six months of 2023 vs first half of 2020. The report by a pro-abortion group found about 511,000 abortions across 36 states this year — up 46,000 from three years ago. The sharpest increase was in states bordering those with abortion bans (evil Colorado, Illinois, and South Carolina).

Abortion had already been on the rise for years. THANKS OBAMA. They say it could be b/c of travel, economic growth and “telehealth” “access” (commie buzzword). The data involves estimates and there may be inaccuracies. Experts say it may take years to get a fuller picture.

Since SCOTUS reversed Roe v. Wade (in June 2022), 22 states enacted bans and several more severely restricted access, impacting about 25 million women of childbearing age (They don’t know what’s good for themselves). Now, this study shows that many of these women are still finding ways to kill the babies — including traveling across state lines.

Another man railroaded?

(CNN or theSkimm Fri. 9/8/23) MeToo’d Danny Masterson. Yesterday, the “That ‘70s Show” and “The Ranch” actor was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison for raping two women in the early 2000s. One of the women said the actor “has not shown an ounce of remorse for the pain he caused.” Masterson waived his right to speak.

30 years behind bars! — he was declared (“found”) “guilty” in May.

Pray for Peter Navarro

(theSkimm Fri. 9/8/23) Who is facing criminal charges… Peter Navarro. Yesterday, a jury found former President Trump's trade advisor guilty of contempt of Congress (OBAMA’S BLACK AG ERIC HOLDER, FAST & FURIOUS? NOTHING HAPPENED TO HIM!).

Last year, Navarro refused to testify before the Democrat-led Jan. 6 committee and hand over subpoenaed documents. He said he didn’t appear at the deposition because Trump told him to assert executive privilege — a legal principle that allows some White House communications to remain withheld.

Last week, a district judge rejected that argument. Now, he faces up to two years in prison and a maximum fine of $100,000. His sentencing is scheduled for January. Navarro, who plans to appeal the conviction, is the second Trump aide to be convicted in relation to the Jan. 6 committee inquiry.

Get over your Covid Apathy!

(CNN Fri. 9/8/23) Covid-19 cases (cases! cases!) are increasing, but after the pandemic's intense physical and emotional toll, many people can't seem to muster the energy to care. If the virus feels too overwhelming to think about again or is not yet in your immediate view, these expert tips can help you get over Covid apathy.

Are they gonna drop Biden?

(CNN or theSkimm Fri. 9/8/23) A new CNN poll reveals decreased confidence among Democratic-aligned voters about supporting President Joe Biden in the 2024 election. The dismal poll numbers come as Biden faces broadly negative job ratings overall and widespread concerns that his age, at 80 years old, might affect his current level of physical and mental competence. According to the poll, a broad 67% majority of Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters wish they had an alternative to Biden — and 46% of registered voters say that any Republican presidential nominee would be a better choice than Biden in 2024. While we are still around 14 months away from the election, it's a safe bet that Biden will be the party's nominee, assuming no other credible Democrats will step up to challenge him. However, analysts are cautioning his current unpopularity may give former President Donald Trump his shot at reclaiming power.

Hong Kong flooding: God’s judgment?

(CNN or theSkimm Fri. 9/8/23) Hong Kong received 6 inches of rain within one hour today. Flash flooding in the city has submerged metro stations and trapped drivers on roads, as authorities suspended schools and urged the public to seek safe shelter. The hourly rainfall today is the highest since records began in 1884, the government said.

Hurricane Lee

(theSkimm Fri. 9/8/23) Storm brewin’: The Atlantic Ocean. This morning, Hurricane Lee rapidly strengthened into a Category 5 hurricane and doubled in speed in the last 24 hours (160mph!). Experts said the hurricane would go “well north” of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands (US and British), either over the weekend or early next week. It’s uncertain if the storm will cause damage in the East Coast, but officials are advising people to steer clear of the water due to “life threatening” rip currents affecting most of the Caribbean and the East Coast.

Track the storm on HURRICANE LEE page of NHC.NOAA.gov

CNN: Hurricane Lee has strengthened into a major Category 5 storm, packing maximum sustained wind speeds of 160 mph as it spins over the Atlantic. The storm system is well east of the Caribbean but could still become a dangerous hurricane over the southwestern Atlantic early next week, according to the National Hurricane Center. Computer model trends for Lee have shown the hurricane taking a turn to the north early next week, though it's still too soon to know how close it will get to the US. Meteorologists say that any potential impact on the East Coast will become more clear as Lee moves to the west in the coming days.

G20 (LAME!)

(CNN or theSkimm Fri. 9/8/23) World leaders have begun arriving in India for the annual G20 summit, where they will meet to address several pressing crises facing the globe. President Joe Biden and other US allies are set to arrive today at the forum in New Delhi, but Russian President Vladimir Putin and China's President Xi Jinping are not expected to attend. Amid heightened international tensions, the two autocratic leaders are skipping the summit for various reasons, but analysts say both absences display clear fractures coursing through the gathering. Xi has never missed a G20 summit since taking power in 2012, which may mark a shift in how China views the G20 — a premier global forum that brings together economies representing 80% of global GDP.
