Sleepy Joe gotta go!

(CNN or theSkimm Wed. 11/8/23) A new CNN poll shows former President Donald Trump narrowly leading President Joe Biden 49% to 45% in a hypothetical rematch. This is fraying nerves among Democrats, but inside Biden’s headquarters, the president’s advisers remain confident that his coalition will grow — and that he is still the party’s best option in 2024 to win the White House.

Are you down with Aborsh? 'Top story' (top of the dung pile)

(theSkimm Wed. 11/8/23) So-called Americans yesterday voted to protect abortion access (Communist Buzzword). (Govt greenlight to kill the mostly unborn babies willy-nilly.)

In Ohio, voters approved a constitutional amendment enshrining the right to abortion and other kinds of reproductive health care. Ohio is not the first state to pass a pro-abortion-rights ballot measure. Since SCOTUS overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, all six states with abortion on their ballots voted in favor of protecting access. But Ohio is the first supposedly “Republican-led state” that had the option to enshrine abortion rights in their state constitution. It took it. Now, as with Roe v. Wade, the state guarantees the right to an abortion until at least the point of viability, around 23 weeks into a pregnancy.

What else did the suckers vote for? More self-destruction! (Ohio was HIGH, that’s why!)

(CNN & theSkimm Wed. 11/8/23) Democrats celebrating a number of key victories

  1. Ohio also legalized recreational use of marijuana

  2. In Kentucky, Gov. Andy Beshear (Democrat) is keeping his job a second term after he made abortion rights a key issue in his campaign.

  3. Mississippi: Republicans did get a win with Gov. Tate Reeves (R) clinching re-election (Democrat challenger Brandon Presley conceded).

  4. Virginia Democrats took full control of the state legislature — spelling trouble for Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin's agenda.

  5. Rhode Island voters elected Gabe Amo (D) to become the state’s first [b]lack candidate elected to Congress.

  6. Philadelphia voted in its first ever female mayor: Cherelle Parker (D).

  7. In New York City, Yusef Salaam — an exonerated member of the “Central Park Five” — won a seat on city council after running unopposed.

Meanwhile, concerns around voting safety and security kept some polling places open later than expected.

In an off-cycle year, voting turnout can plummet. Still, those who did turn out provided a glimpse into how voters across the country might be feeling ahead of 2024.

As for the Oval Office, five Republican candidates will be making their case to America in a debate tonight.

Gun Control

(CNN or theSkimm Wed. 11/8/23) Yesterday, the conservative-leaning Supreme Court seemed likely to uphold a “Gun controlfederal law that blocks people under domestic violence restraining orders from getting guns. In 2019, Zackey Rahimi assaulted his girlfriend and threatened to shoot her if she told anyone. She got a protective order against him, which blocked Rahimi from owning guns. He violated that order, and his case eventually reached the Supreme Court. During oral arguments yesterday, the justices seemed open to gun restrictions on dangerous people.

NOT READ: But gun rights groups have argued that people served with a domestic abuse restraining order haven’t necessarily been convicted — so it would be an infringement on their Second Amendment rights. SCOTUS is expected to issue a ruling next summer.

  • Evil Rashida Tlaib censored by bipartisan evil Congress  //  Newborn syphilis cases rising!  //

Rashida Censored, or not? At least Censured!

(CNN or theSkimm Wed. 11/8/23) QUOTE: “We are human beings just like anyone else.” — Democrat Rep. Rashida Tlaib, sharing remarks Tuesday after the House passed a Republican-led resolution to censure her over recent comments critical of Israel and in support of Palestinians. The Michigan Democrat is the first Palestinian-hyphen-”American” anchor baby woman to “serve” (HER OWN EGO) in Congress and argues the censure resolution is an effort to silence her amid Israel’s war against Hamas.

Last night, the BIPARTISAN (meaning evil) House voted 234-188 to censure Tlaib (Detroit-MI). Twenty-two Democrats voted with most Republicans to censure — a punishment that's below expulsion. The vote came after Tlaib criticized President Biden's handling of the latest Israel-Hamas war and posted a video showing protesters chanting the phrase, “From the river to the sea, [the rest of the popular chant says: ‘Palestine will be free’]” (also said “No peace on stolen land.”) Some see the phrase as a call for “equal rights” (NO SUCH THING). Others, like the extremely evil ADL (Anti-Defamation League), deem the phrase as “antisemitic” and as a call for the eradication of Israel (which is also between the River and the Sea, River Jordan, and the Mediterranean Sea?).

Tlaib describes the phrase as “an aspirational call for freedom, human rights (commie buzzword), and peaceful coexistence, not death, destruction, or hate.” (HATE IS ALL SHE HAS THO)

This marks the second effort in a week to censure Rashida Tlaib during the latest Israel-Hamas war. Ahead of the vote, Tlaib gave a speech on the House floor, saying she would not be “silenced.” She also said: “I can’t believe I have to say this, but Palestinian people are not disposable. We are human beings just like anyone else…Speaking up to save lives, Mr. Chair, no matter faith, no matter ethnicity should not be controversial in this chamber.” (What a mess…)

The vote comes as Israel says they’ve surrounded Gaza City and that Hamas’s leader, Yahya Sinwar, was reportedly alone in a bunker. The news also comes as authorities investigate the death of a 69-year-old Jewish man following that protest / riot in California.

What health officials are warning about…

(Not CNN but theSkimm Wed. 11/8/23) Newborn syphilis cases. The sexually transmitted infection typically leads to sores and skin rashes but was almost eradicated in the early 2000s thanks to rapid screening and awareness. Now, it’s on the rise, with transmission growing from pregnant mothers to their fetuses. Last year, the CDC documented over 3,700 cases of syphilis in newborns — the highest in 30 years. Those impacts can be deadly, with infant death in up to 40% of cases.

NOT READ: Those who survive face risks of becoming blind, deaf, or experiencing severe developmental delays. Authorities say 90% of these cases could’ve been prevented through routine prenatal care. But some mothers can’t have prenatal visits due to a range of potential factors, like lack of health insurance or inaccessibility. The National Coalition of STD Directors is asking for $1 billion in federal funding to tackle the rise in syphilis.

NOT READ: Housing market

(CNN not theSkimm Wed. 11/8/23) The housing market in the US is the least affordable it has been since 1984, and analysts aren’t expecting it to rebound in the near term. It now takes nearly 41% of the median household’s monthly income to cover the principal and interest payments on a median-priced home, new data shows. This comes as the painful combination of high mortgage rates, soaring home prices, and low inventory is pushing the American dream further from reach for many prospective homebuyers. After seven consecutive weekly increases, the 30-year fixed rate stands at around 7.7% — that’s miles away from the pre-Covid rate of 3.8% in the fall of 2019. Climate change is also damaging the market as acquiring homeowners’ insurance remains challenging in areas that frequently experience extreme weather events.

What’s starry eyed…

(CNN or theSkimm Wed. 11/8/23) The Euclid telescope. Yesterday, the European Space Agency’s telescope revealed its first images of the “dark side” of the universe. The agency unveiled the telescope in July along with its mission to document dark matter and dark energy — which is believed to make up 95% of the universe but remains largely unknown. Euclid can see galaxies 10 billion light-years away, and scientists hope its images will show how the universe has evolved. The telescope’s first image captured the Perseus Galaxy Cluster and Horsehead Nebula, which includes about 100,000 galaxies — many of which have never been seen before. It comes as scientists have uncovered the oldest black hole yet, forming 470 million years after the Big Bang. It’s a booming time for space discoveries.

G7 summit (lame-o “leaders”)

(CNN or theSkimm Wed. 11/8/23) Representatives from the G7 member countries are gathering in Tokyo today to discuss a long list of issues, including how to respond to the Israel-Hamas war. The G7 is shorthand for Group of Seven, an organization of leaders from some of the world’s largest economies: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the US. A group of G7 ministers earlier today voiced support for humanitarian pauses in Gaza to support aid deliveries, civilian movement and the immediate release of hostages — but stopped short of calling for a ceasefire. They also discussed commitments to remain united in their support of Ukraine amid Russian aggression.

More on Israel-Palestine war

(CNN or theSkimm Wed. 11/8/23) Israel says its forces are at the “heart of Gaza City” where they are targeting Hamas infrastructure and commanders. “Underground, they have kilometers of tunnels connecting to hospitals and schools,” a spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces told CNN, adding, “We continue to dismantle this capability.” Israel’s defense minister also reiterated the government’s position that the country will not implement a “humanitarian pause” without the return of hostages captured by Hamas. Despite the outcry over the scale of suffering throughout Gaza’s residential areas, medical facilities and shelters, Israeli forces maintain they will strike at Hamas “wherever necessary.”
