  • SpaceX launch flight Sat ended prematurely in explosion  //  Israel-Hamas: Shifa hospital, Hamas shield? Red Sea: “Iran-backed” Houthis from Yemen hijacked an Israeli ship. Space is real

(CNN or theSkimm Mon. 11/20/23) Elon Musk’s SpaceX launched the most powerful rocket ever constructed Saturday from south Texas. The uncrewed rocket system, Starship, safely took off — but the test flight ended prematurely with an explosion and a loss of signal.

Israel-Hamas mess

(CNN or theSkimm Mon. 11/20/23)

  • Shifa hospital: Israel has released video of what it describes as a tunnel entrance and security cam footage of Hamas militants taking hostages into Shifa hospital on October 7th (an alleged shield for Hamas operations). Hamas says they brought the hostages in for medical treatment and that Israel’s allegations are a “pure lie.” Almost 300 patients remain in Shifa hospital while dozens of babies were evacuated for treatment.

  • Red Sea: Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels reportedly took over two dozen crew members hostage on a ship they say is Israeli owned. (I thought Israel confirmed it.)

  • Reports that Israel and Hamas are close to reaching a deal that would see Hamas release dozens of hostages in exchange for a five-day pause in fighting… Hundreds of families are agonizing over the fate of their loved ones as sources say a possible deal to secure the release of some hostages held by Hamas may be in sight. Negotiations have been in progress for weeks between the US, Israel and the militant group, mediated by Gulf state Qatar — senior Biden administration officials, are expressing rare optimism about the progress.

Trump at the border!

(CNN or theSkimm Mon. 11/20/23) President Donald Trump on Sunday visited Texas near the US-Mexico border as he escalates his anti-immigrant rhetoric and campaigns on hard-line immigration policy proposals. During the visit, Trump received the endorsement of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who continues to spar with the Biden administration over its efforts to curtail illegal immigration. Also on Sunday, Vice President Kamala Harris aimed to confront Biden’s lackluster polling and age concerns. “We’re going to have to earn our reelect, there’s no doubt about it,” Harris told CNN. Separately on the campaign trail, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said the presidency is “not a job for somebody that is pushing 80” as he sought to contrast his youth relative to former President Donald Trump, 77, and President Joe Biden, who turns 81 today.

Jimmy Carter’s wife died

(CNN or theSkimm Mon. 11/20/23) RIP Rosalynn Carter. Yesterday, the former first lady died at age 96 — days after entering hospice care. As first lady, she had an active role in President Jimmy Carter's administration, serving as an envoy to Latin America, attending Cabinet meetings, and advocating for mental health care legislation. After leaving the White House, the Carters founded the Carter Center to promote efforts like the campaign to eradicate Guinea worm disease. In 1999, President Bill Clinton awarded the Carters the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Former President Carter remembered his wife of 77 years as his “equal partner in everything,” adding as long as she was around he “always knew somebody loved and supported” him.

CNN: Rosalynn Carter died peacefully Sunday with family by her side, according to a statement from The Carter Center. She was 96. “As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody loved and supported me,” her husband, [third-or-fourth-worst] President Jimmy Carter, said. She and her husband celebrated 77 years of marriage in July. Rosalynn Carter entered hospice care last week and was diagnosed with dementia in May.

Milei won in Argentina!

(CNN or theSkimm Mon. 11/20/23) Based Argentina. Yesterday, the Latin American country elected “populist” (whatever that means) candidate Javier Milei as president, shifting the country’s government to the right. He beat center-left (extremist liberal) Economy Minister Sergio Massa with nearly 56% of the vote. Milei — often compared to former President Trump — ran on a platform that promoted loosening gun laws, abolishing the country’s central bank, and changing the national currency to the US dollar. He’s been popular with young voters and Argentines who’ve been fed up with the country’s triple-digit inflation and widespread poverty. Former President Trump and Brazil’s former President Jair Bolsonaro celebrated Milei’s win. Milei — who takes office next month — said “reconstruction of Argentina begins today.”

CNN: 55% is the percentage of votes that “far-right” (centrist) outsider Javier Milei received Sunday in Argentina’s presidential elections, making him the new president-elect. Milei’s victory marks an extraordinary rise for the former TV pundit who has pledged to take Argentina into a new political era and tame the country’s historically high inflation

Thanksgiving weather…

(CNN or theSkimm Mon. 11/20/23) Tens of millions of people across the US are at risk of severe storms this week that could impact Thanksgiving travel. One notable storm system is headed into the South after blowing through the Rockies over the weekend, leaving heavy mountain snowfall piled nearly a foot high in parts of Utah, Nevada and Colorado. The day with the most weather-related headaches for travelers is likely to be Tuesday, with a low-pressure system bringing rain and thunderstorms to the majority of the eastern half of the country. Several areas expecting rain include major airport cities — New York, Washington, Chicago and Atlanta. All could see delays and frustrations due to the wet forecast.

10 is open again?

(CNN or theSkimm Mon. 11/20/23) Commuters in Los Angeles are awaking to pleasant news today after that portion of Interstate 10 reopened ahead of schedule following a massive fire earlier this month (MEANING TWO SATURDAYS AGO, A WEEK AND A DAY — THAT’S NOT AHEAD OF SCHEDULE, GOOGLE MAPS SAID SUNDAY THE 19th).

The vital transportation artery typically sees more than 300,000 daily drivers, now flowing in all five lanes ahead of today’s morning commute and before the Thanksgiving holiday, California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced. Officials previously said the roadway would open on Tuesday. (I thought I heard hundreds of people were working 24-hours…)

Authorities released a photo of a person of interest who was seen in the area when the fire started.

UMC is breaking up

(CNN or theSkimm Mon. 11/20/23) DIVIDED: The United Methodist Church. Over the weekend, its North Georgia Conference gave 261 congregations the OK to break away from the church. The UMC is the second-largest Protestant denomination in the US with reportedly more than 6.5 million members. But since 2019, the church has seen more than 7,000 congregations leave amid divisions over the role of LGBTQIA+ members and same-sex marriage. Many are opting to join the more conservative Global Methodist Church. The North Georgia Conference said the latest departures marked a “solemn day.”

Stop committing suicide

(CNN or theSkimm Mon. 11/20/23) QUOTE: “The net is a symbol of hope and care.” (LOL YEAH RIGHT)  — Golden Gate Bridge spokes[man] Paolo Cosulich-Schwartz, commenting on the ongoing construction of a suicide safety net below the iconic San Francisco bridge. Proponents of the $217 million project believe the 1.7-mile-long net, which is nearing completion, will offer many people a second chance at life.
