Israel

(CNN and theSkimm Fri. 10/13/23) Israel has called on all civilians in Gaza City to leave their homes and head south today ahead of a potential ground invasion in response to Hamas’ terror attacks that killed more than 1,300 people. The UN, however, said an order for the mass evacuation was “impossible” without major humanitarian consequences. Israel has amassed more than 300,000 reservists along its southern border for its possible intensified military operation, but Hamas militants told Palestinians living in the besieged Gaza Strip not to leave their homes. Meanwhile, the Biden administration said it will begin chartering flights today from Israel to destinations in Europe, as officials scramble to get Americans stranded in the war-ravaged country back home to the US.

Although Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu initially warned Palestinians in Gaza to leave, there is no humanitarian corridor for them to do so.

It’s the next big thing!

(CNN and theSkimm Fri. 10/13/23)  Protests have broken out all week in Jordan, Spain, Brazil, and across the US in support of both Palestinians and Israelis — gathering outside embassies, government buildings and LAME-O college campuses. In recent days, many of the world’s most recognizable landmarks have also been illuminated in the blue and white colors of Israel’s flag as a show of solidarity (communist buzzword, but to be fair Christian TRUMP mentioned it).

Fears violence will spread!

(CNN or theSkimm Fri. 10/13/23) Nearly a week into the Israel-Hamas war, there are fears that violence will spread beyond the region.

A former Hamas leader called for global protests today. In a recorded statement to Reuters, Khaled Meshaal urged the Arab world to “head to the squares and streets” to show support for Palestinians. He also said, “to all scholars who teach jihad…this is a moment for the application (of theories).”

What does that mean? It’s not clear. Social media posts have fanned fears that his latest statement is calling for violence against Jews. But “jihad” is a complex word with a broad meaning that comes down to context. Literally, the word "jihad" means “struggle.” One expert has explained it as “the ‘greater’ jihad is the struggle to be a good Muslim…such as getting out of bed for prayers at dawn.” Another expert has said radicals have used “loopholes” when using the word jihad to justify their violence. This is how the terms “jihad” and “jihadist” have become widely equated with terrorist groups like al-Qaeda, ISIS, and the Taliban. The term still inspires an enormous amount of fear because of past acts of terror committed by terrorists claiming it.

The [black on the inside] White House reportedly has said it’s aware of the calls for protests but is not aware of any credible threats. Some Jewish schools in NYC are reportedly closing as a precaution. Cities across the US, including New York and DC, are boosting security. Meanwhile, CAIR — a Muslim organization — has said there’s been a rise in targeted attacks against students expressing support for Palestinians or because of their Muslim faith. NYPD is investigating at least two other incidents of people being assaulted for showing Palestinian support. Columbia University has closed off to the public after an Israeli student was assaulted.

House Speaker

(CNN and theSkimm Fri. 10/13/23) House Republicans appear to be far from electing a new speaker after Majority Leader Steve Scalise abruptly withdrew from the speaker’s race Thursday evening. Scalise announced he was dropping out after his GOP conference failed to coalesce behind him in the aftermath of Kevin McCarthy’s historic ouster. Republicans have now effectively frozen the chamber at a time when major international and domestic crises loom, from Israel’s war against Hamas to a potential government shutdown in November. Additionally, with no indication there is any viable candidate who could secure the 217 votes needed to win the Speaker role, questions are being raised about how long the standoff will last and at what cost.

Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA). Yesterday, the House Majority Leader withdrew his nomination for speaker after it became clear he had nowhere near the votes for it. That’s because in a closed-door House GOP vote, Scalise won 113 votes and would need at least 217 in a full floor vote. Now, Republicans are back to square one — though Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) could try again.

BLM “victim” — another white cop lynched!

(CNN or theSkimm Fri. 10/13/23) QUOTE: “Hopefully today’s verdict can be a sign for healing.” FAT CHANCE! — Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser, issuing a statement after one Colorado police officer who arrested Elijah McClain was convicted of criminally negligent homicide. The other officer was acquitted. Elijah McClain ("spiritual seeker, pacifist, oddball, vegetarian, athlete, and peacemaker who was exceedingly gentle."[20] His mother home-schooled him, "intellectually gifted, but fiercely independent"... one of his massage therapy clients called him "the sweetest, purest person… definitely a light in a whole lot of darkness". An acquaintance said, "I don't even think he would set a mousetrap if there was a rodent problem."[20]), an unarmed (IRRELEVANT) 23-year-old [b]lack male (in an open-faced ski mask, someone called the cops on him), died after he was subdued by police and injected with ketamine by paramedics in 2019.

Iran didn’t get their money!

(CNN or theSkimm Fri. 10/13/23) Iran. Yesterday, outlets reported that the US and Qatar “reached a quiet understanding” to block Iran from accessing $6 billion. The money was released last month in exchange for five US prisoners, with the note that Iran can only use the money for humanitarian necessities. However, the US and Qatar are hitting pause on that after Hamas’s unprecedented attack against Israel, with the GOP criticizing President Biden for the deal. Iran has funded Hamas with about $100 million a year. US officials have said there’s no evidence yet that Iran is directly involved with the assaults, and have not yet tapped the funds. Iran has denied any involvement and has said “the money rightfully belongs to the people of Iran.”

RIP one of the Isley Bros!

(CNN or theSkimm Fri. 10/13/23) RIP Rudolph Isley, one of the founding members of the R&B group The Isley Brothers, has died, his family announced. He was 84. Though the band’s membership evolved through the years, The Isley Brothers had enduring success with songs like “Love The One You’re With” and “Testify.”

China Virus

(CNN or theSkimm Fri. 10/13/23) More than 7 million Americans have received a dose of the updated Covid-19 vaccine since it became available in September, the Department of Health and Human Services said Thursday. The CDC recommended vaccines from Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech for everyone 6 months and older on September 12. An updated vaccine from Novavax, which became available this month, is recommended for people 12 and over

NOT READ: In comparison, when last year’s bivalent Covid-19 booster was available, more than 18 million people had received a dose by October 12, 2022, about six weeks after the CDC signed off on it. The new Covid-19 vaccines have been updated to target currently circulating coronavirus variants.

NOT READ: Medicare

(CNN or theSkimm Fri. 10/13/23) Medicare enrollees will spend around $10 more next year for their monthly Part B premiums, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services announced Thursday. The standard monthly premium for Medicare Part B will be $174.70 for 2024, up from $164.90 this year. The premium increase means that retirees will see a monthly bump of less than $50, on average, in their Social Security benefits next year. This comes as many seniors are concerned about their personal finances, analysts say. Inflation has caused Social Security payments to lose 36% of their buying power since 2000, according to a study released earlier this year by The Senior Citizens League. Monthly benefits would have to increase by $517 to maintain the same level of buying power as in 2000.

NOT READ: TikTok

(CNN or theSkimm Fri. 10/13/23) EU officials issued a warning to TikTok on Thursday about “illegal content and disinformation” on its platform linked to the war between Israel and Hamas. The EU called for TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew to respond within 24 hours and warned that failure to comply with its laws around content moderation could result in penalties. Also on Thursday, a federal judge ripped into Montana’s statewide TikTok ban, saying in a hearing that the legislation appears driven by “paternalistic” views. Montana became the first state to authorize a complete ban on TikTok in May, prompting an immediate legal challenge. This ongoing court battle is being closely watched because it is viewed as a bellwether for TikTok’s future in the rest of the US.
