Airbag recall!?

(CNN or theSkimm Fri. 10/6/23) The US government wants 52 million airbags recalled over concerns that they could potentially explode in a crash. However, the companies that put them in cars argue a broad recall would be "simply unprecedented" considering just seven "isolated incidents" have occurred.

The airbag in a 2015 Chevy Traverse (crossover SUV) killed one guy’s mother — she had cuts and bruises on her face and shoulder, and a fatal gash in her neck —  she bled out.

Inflaters reportedly ruptured in a 2002 Chrysler Town & Country and a 2004 Kia Optima, prompting a 2015 investigation by NHTSA. More incidents happened — investigating airbags made between 2000 and 2018. In May 2023, General Motors recalled 1 million GM vehicles with the air bags.

NHTSA pointed out that it requested Takata recall 67 million airbags (2014) following explosions in only six of them. (There were ultimately more.) Takata’s situation was different in that the ruptures were the result of chemicals in the inflators breaking down over time, particularly in areas with high heat and humidity.

Biden building a wall, after all

(CNN & theSkimm Fri. 10/6/23) The Biden administration announced Wednesday plans to expand the US-Mexico border wall, despite President Joe Biden vowed as a 2020 candidate that he would not build "another foot."

Earlier this week, the Obama Part III admin waived 26 federal laws in Starr County, TX, to add about 20 miles to the border wall. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced they’re waiving federal laws like the Clean Air Act, the Safe Drinking Water Act, and the Endangered Species Act to speed up the building process and stop “high illegal entry” into the US.

The “president” defended his reversal to reporters on Thursday, saying that he tried to get the money appropriated for other purposes but was unsuccessful.

A new surge of migrants is straining federal and local resources and placing heavy political pressure on the Biden administration to address the sprawling crisis. Illegal entries into the US reached about 245,000 this fiscal year and cities are struggling with migrant arrivals.

The admin said they tried to divert the money being used to build the wall but that Congress refused the request. Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) called the border wall “a 14th-century solution to a 21st-century problem.”

Environmentalist mamas see it as a blow to the habitats of endangered plants and species.

President Trump — rallied behind the phrase “Build th[e] Wall” in 2016 — is waiting for an apology

The US-Mexico border spans 1,951 miles, with the Trump admin covering 4% with a wall (PSH…Don’t ask me how they figure that number. Try 25-percent, Trump built nearly 500 miles… — theSkimm is pushing FAKE news!). Now, the Biden admin is reversing years of pushback to add 20 miles.

Speaker campaign

(CNN & theSkimm Fri. 10/6/23) Yesterday, President Trump said he’d be open to acting as the House Speaker for a “short period of time” if Republicans can’t get their elephants in a row. Trump is not a congressman. That technically doesn’t disqualify him but he was indicted on felony charges so the GOP would have to change a rule. Trump said he’s “not doing it because I want to” but “if necessary” and is thinking about making a trip to the Hill in the coming days. Meanwhile, Reps. Steve Scalise (R-LA) and Jim Jordan (R-OH) have been trying to get votes before next week

Trump endorsed Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan's bid for speaker of the House today.

He was approached in recent days by GOP lawmakers who floated the idea of him serving as speaker, even on a temporary basis. Sources close to Trump say that while he is "flattered" and "honored" that people have raised his name, he is not seriously entertaining the idea. Even if he did run for speaker, Trump would need to earn the majority of the votes of lawmakers present and voting — which could prove difficult for a former president who is polarizing even among members of the GOP conference.

Nobel Prize

(CNN or theSkimm Fri. 10/6/23) The 2023 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to jailed Iranian feminist activist Ms. Narges Mohammadi early today. The committee said it was for "her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all." Narges Mohammadi has been a prisoner for most of the past two decades. She has been sentenced repeatedly for being the voice of the voiceless, for her unrelenting campaign against the death penalty and solitary confinement – which she has had to endure for weeks at a time. She is currently serving a sentence of 10 years and 9 months, accused of actions against national security and propaganda against the state. She was also sentenced to 154 lashes, among other punishments.

The Nobel Peace Prize. Today, jailed Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi won the award for her work fighting the oppression of women in Iran. For decades, the 51-year-old has worked to expand women’s rights — including through civil rights organizations and by writing and speaking publicly. Her activism continued behind bars, after Iran jailed her multiple times and sentenced her to over 30 years in prison.

The news comes after this past weekend, 16-year-old Armita Geravand fell into a coma after walking into public transit with her hair uncovered — sparking allegations against the Iranian government. It also comes on the heels of the one-year anniversary of the death of Mahsa Amini, who sparked a wave of women-led protests across the country.

Ukraine propaganda

(CNN or theSkimm Fri. 10/6/23) Russia launched a missile strike Thursday that killed at least 51 people — including a child — in a village near the eastern Ukrainian city of Kupiansk, officials say, in one of the deadliest attacks against civilians since the war began. Moscow’s forces targeted a cafe and a shop in Hroza, in the Kharkiv region, which had locals inside. Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov said the strike shows Kyiv needs more defense systems to "protect our country from terror," amid fears of dwindling military aid from Western allies. The UN's humanitarian coordinator in Ukraine said images arriving from the scene of the attack "are absolutely horrifying."
