(Brave) In July 2024, French far-right MP Flavien Termet, a 22-year-old member of the National Rally (RN), was appointed to welcome deputies during the first session of the newly formed French parliament, a ceremonial role given to the youngest MP. However, many left-wing MPs refused to shake his hand as they cast their votes. The RN has been described as a party known for racism and xenophobia, which motivated the refusal.

Among those who declined the handshake was François Piquemal, a left-wing MP from La France Insoumise, who instead made a "scissors" gesture as if playing rock-paper-scissors, symbolically "defeating" Termet. Piquemal later commented on social media, stating, “If the ballot boxes are like rock paper scissors, in the end, it is the NFP [New Popular Front] which wins”. Another MP, Sébastien Delogu, stared silently at Termet without shaking his hand and later posted, “Shake hands with a racist party? NEVER”.

While the gesture was widely interpreted as a political snub, it was not universal—some deputies did shake Termet’s hand, though a significant number from left-wing and far-left parties (including LFI, Greens, Socialists, and Communists) abstained. The incident highlighted deep political divisions in France following the 2024 elections, in which the left-wing New Popular Front won the most seats, followed by Macron’s centrists and then the National Rally.
