TIPS

#SeAcabó

(theSkimm Tue. 8/29/23) The Women’s World Cup’s kissing scandal has evolved into a criminal investigation.

Yesterday, Spanish prosecutors announced they’re opening an investigation into whether or not Luis Rubiales should be charged with sexual aggression. The investigation follows an unwanted kiss Rubiales planted on star player Jenni Hermoso during their World Cup victory earlier this month. Over the weekend, FIFA suspended Rubiales for 90 days. Now, Spanish prosecutors gave Hermoso 15 days to file a sexual assault complaint against Rubiales — which they need to move forward with a case against him.

How are people reacting? Rubiales has refused to resign and vowed to “fight to the end.” Rubiales’ mother locked herself in a church in southern Spanish and is on a hunger strike. She said she plans to strike “day and night” over the inhumane “hunt” against her son. Meanwhile, in Madrid, hundreds gathered in support of Hermoso as Spain's Sports Tribunal and the Spanish Football Federation met. They discussed Rubiales’ future and asked him to resign. They said, “The unacceptable behavior has caused great damage to the image of Spanish soccer.”

theSkimm: Shortly after winning its first Women’s World Cup title, La Roja found itself at the center of a scandal that put sexism at the forefront of a sport that’s struggling to overcome it. Now, players and fans are saying #SeAcabó (it's over) and calling for Rubiales’ resignation.

Whose stock went flying…

(theSkimm Tue. 8/29/23) Hawaiian Electric Company’s. Yesterday, the electric utility company’s stock price went up more than 40%. The jump comes after the company defended itself against a lawsuit filed by Maui County blaming them for the deadly wildfires that spread through the island. The company said its power lines that were knocked down by high winds caused a morning brush fire. But that their power lines were off when a second fire sparked later that day. Now, shares of the utility company were up to $13.56 — their largest jump ever. Still, the stock fell about 70% this month — putting it on track for its worst month yet.

Frustration at climate activists blocking roads

So much cussing…

CLIP? (FordFischer) VIDEO THREAD: On Saturday morning, @DecEmergency climate activists blocked a street in Washington DC again, their third time this week. This time, several drivers got out of their cars yelling "I wanna go to work!" and grabbing their banners out of their hands. 🎥: @wallendupraw

CLIP? (FordFischer) 2) When police arrived, they recognized one of the climate activists blocking the road as having been arrested in a similar act on Wednesday. "You're under arrest for contempt of court!" an officer declared. Drivers clapped and cheered as he was handcuffed.

CLIP? (FordFischer) 3) Police typically give three warnings before arresting road-blockers in DC, but this time, they gave one: "You're not getting three warnings!" As some began leaving the road, MPD's Jason Bagshaw said "everyone's under arrest" and had all of them cuffed.

CLIP? (FordFischer) 4) "Y'all know you haven't done the proper warnings?" said one of the climate activists in handcuffs, having expected three warnings and a chance to avoid arrest. "We don't have to," an officer told her before all of them, including their police liaison, were taken away.

FYI: (FordFischer) 5) Here is the full @N2Sreports video of Saturday's @DecEmergency road block in DC, where some drivers physically took matters into their own hands before police arrived, filmed by @wallendupraw. Sha’Carri Richardson

Sha'Carri Richardson - Wikipedia - 23yo, raised by grandma and aunt. She found out her birthmother died by a reporter asking her about it, took marijuana after it… She tweeted she has a “girlfriend” in 2021 and shouted out the LGBTQ’s that June.

(USA Today) 'Always fight': Sha'Carri Richardson is fiery, blunt and one of the best things in sports — (Mike Freeman) black guy writing she’s unapologetically black

After Sha'Carri Richardson became the fastest woman in the world at the 2023 track and field world championships Monday in Budapest, Hungary, running a 10.65 to win her first ever world title in the women’s 100 meters, which is faster than the speed of some starships, she sat in a post-race press conference that in some ways was as entertaining as her sprint.

In it Richardson, who doesn't often speak to the media, showed why she is one of the strongest, fiercest, take-no-mess American athletes. She is a multi-faceted force who will irritate some people, or even anger them, but in the end, always amaze them. She is, to be blunt, one of the best things going in all of sports.

She is also without question, and greatly, and admirably, unapologetically Black.

Black women are often asked to behave with a certain level of timidity. Can't talk too loudly or be too good. We've seen this phenomenon with numerous Black women athletes, most notably with Venus and Serena Williams. Richardson will have none of it. She's herself and doesn't care what you think. That type of agency is powerful and you can see it almost radiate off of her during that press conference.

"If you take away the 'Black' in front of the 'woman' and another woman reacts the same way," she told Teen Vogue last year, "it’s not considered as 'sassy,' (or) 'aggressive.'"

She's far from perfect. She's made mistakes. She will make more. This is what people in their 20s do. This is what many people of all ages do. Her social media habits are at times questionable and even someone who is extremely pro-Black made a horrible mistake in liking an anti-Jamaican post on Twitter. But she seems to have learned from those days without losing her brashness. Those lessons may have actually started taking shape several years ago.

"The attention comes with the big personality, and I have no problem with it," Richardson told the New York Times in 2021. "It makes me work so I don’t end up looking crazy."
