INVASION
From Hake News … (CNN) 250,000 — That’s approximately how many migrant invaders ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) is monitoring in the US using GPS ankle monitors and government-issued phones, according to the agency's latest statistics.
The Biden administration has rapidly increased the number of people in the program known as "alternatives to detention" to better manage the increasing number of asylum cases. However, critics on both sides of the immigration debate say the program raises several big questions about privacy and funding that should concern every American.
ALSO: (Fox News, Michael Lee) Migrant in potentially the largest caravan ever demands Biden keep asylum promise: The Haitian migrant cited President Biden's vow to end Title 42 and called on the president to keep his promise: "He promised the Haitian community he will help them," the migrants, who were interviewed by Fox News Friday, said. "He will recall Title 42. He will help us have real asylum." … a caravan that could become the largest ever to reach the U.S. southern border, with the current number of close to 10,000 migrants, is expected to swell to about 15,000 before it reaches the border.
(The Guardian, Fri, Jun 3) Up to 15,000 may join largest ever migrant caravan to walk through Mexico to US | US immigration | The Guardian: Thousands of people huddled together for protection move north as leaders gather for Biden’s Summit of the Americas in LA — INTERESTING: I see mostly young men in this crowd, but they profile some female with her dog:
Liozanys Comeja credits her survival to her teacup chihuahua, Mia. Originally from Venezuela, Comeja moved to Colombia five years ago, but decided to leave her new life behind this month due to the rising cost of living. She crossed the Darien Gap, a notorious stretch of jungle between Colombia and Panama, with Mia tucked in her backpack, eventually making her way across eight countries. Now, Comeja is hoping the dog will help her make it through the grueling final leg of their journey.
Comeja has joined about 11,000 others who on Monday will leave Tapachula, a sweltering city on the Mexico-Guatemala border, and head north for the United States. It will depart as leaders from across the hemisphere gather in Los Angeles for the Summit of the Americas.
“Whenever I get discouraged, Mia calms me down,” Comeja said. When they arrive at the US border, Comeja plans to cross the Rio Grande on foot.
This is not the first migrant caravan to leave Tapachula, but it may be the largest ever recorded in Mexico: its numbers are expected to swell in the coming days, and may reach 15,000 people – plus Mia the chihuahua.
UVALDE NPR ARTICLE
(Via Pocket / Firefox) How we pronounce Uvalde says a lot about the power of language in mixed communities (by Isabella Gomez Sarmiento : NPR, June 3)
[OMGosh, “uvalde strong” sign as sleepy sleazy Joe rides by, smh…]
When tragedy struck Uvalde, journalists flooded into the small Texas town to report on the aftermath of the shooting at Robb Elementary School.
That included NPR's own team — and it didn't take long for discussion to break out amongst staff about how to say the name of the town on air.
First, there was "you-VAL-dee," the anglicized pronunciation that's commonly accepted by locals.
But some people there also call it "ooh-VAHL-deh," closer to the Spanish pronunciation, or "you-VAHL-day," which sounds like a middle ground between the two.
Because Uvalde is a town made up of mostly Latino or Hispanic residents, according to the U.S. Census Bureau data, landing on a "correct" pronunciation is tricky — the language of the people who live there exists on a sliding spectrum between Spanish and English, and often consists of a combination of the two.
But how we say Uvalde matters, because it represents a long lineage of how Latinos have been racialized in the U.S. and in South Texas, specifically.
A look at the history
Uvalde was originally named Encina, after the oak trees that grow there. It was later renamed in honor of Mexican governor Juan de Ugalde and incorporated as a county seat in 1856.
Because the town's name was misspelled from its namesake, the way to pronounce it is inherently complicated, says Ricardo Ainslie, director of the Mexico Center at the Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies at The University of Texas at Austin.
But Uvalde is just one example of how many Spanish-origin words are anglicized in Texas and other parts of the country — names like Del Rio, San Marcos, Refugio, or even Los Angeles and San Francisco.
"We know that English was forced upon Mexican-ancestry people living in Texas, probably beginning with the Texas War of Independence and thereafter," says Ainslie. "Spanish was forbidden in schools and children were punished for speaking it." (BASED!)
Spanish itself is an imposed colonial language, forced upon the native Indigenous people of the region. But there's a difference between the way language is understood in Latin America and in the U.S.

BURGER KING AUSTRIA AND AMERICA
(Today / NBC) Burger King Declares It's 'Time to Be Proud' With New Pride Whopper
Burger King Austria put out an instagram post.
Last year Burger King tweeted Burger King on Twitter: "the #ChKing says LGBTQ+ rights! during #pride month (even on Sundays 👀) your chicken sandwich craving can do good! we are making a donation* to @HRC for every Ch'King sold 🏳️🌈" / Twitter
GAY NOTE FROM TODAY: "To celebrate LGBTQ pride, TODAY is sharing this community’s history, pain, joy and what’s next for the movement. We will be publishing personal essays, stories, videos and features throughout the entire month of June."
NOTE: I take more issue (than with lame Burger King) with a mainstream media outlet (or all of them) participating in activism against Christians, marriage, families, children….
